Distraught Girl Is Rescued In Nick Of Time Before Jumping Off Bridge Crossing

A young woman from Roi-et province ran into a spate of bad luck. She was unemployed, lost the contact number for a potential job and all of her money. She didn’t even have money to go home. Thinking she had no way out, she attempted to end it all by leaping from a bridge crossing. Fortunately, she was rescued by the police. A kind soul gave her money for transportation back home. She promised not to try this again.

On 31 July 2007, at 9 AM,. Pattaya Pol.Col.Suthin Sabphueng, and a team of police officers, along with Mr. Sanit Boonmachai, a Pattaya City official, rushed to the bridge crossing in front of Wat Huey Yai, after receiving a phone call that there was a Thai woman attempting to leap off the bridge in order to commit suicide.

Arriving at the bridge, officials found Miss Orasa Phraipruke (20) from Roi-et Province, holding onto a rail on the outside of the bridge and about to leap off. A crowd gathered, causing a traffic jam. Officials attempted to persuade her to get off her perch for thirty minutes, but she did not respond. Finally, rescuers snuck up and grabbed her and brought her back to safety, but with difficulty. The crowd of spectators was all relieved that she was rescued.

After Miss Orasa was calmed down, she tearfully told officials that she comes from a broken family. Her mother and father separated when she was three months old, and left her with her grandparents to raise her. She met a man who fathered her two and a half year old son, but he abandoned her and their son. An older woman, from her village, who has a foreign husband in Pattaya advised her to apply for a waitress job in a restaurant in South Pattaya. She arrived in Pattaya with the contact number for the restaurant. However, she lost her wallet with the phone number, as well as, all of her money.

She did not know whom to contact and was forced to sleep under the bridge of the Tapraya flyover. When she attempted to get work, nobody would hire her as she didn’t have an ID card. She became so distraught that she decided to attempt suicide.

After hearing Miss Orasa’s sad story, Mr. Sanit Boonmachai, a Pattaya City official, asked a municipal official to take Miss Orasa to the bus station, buy a ticket for her to go back home and also to give her some pocket money for the trip. She was very grateful for the kindness shown to her and regretted causing any trouble. She promised that she would not think of committing suicide again
