The government is convening right now to discuss how best to profit individually from this situation.

Therein lies the problem.  The bureaucrats can't agree on who should get the biggest slice of the pie.  These greedy politicians have known about this for 40 years or more.  This information about Bangkok sinking was published way back when you would get your finders dirty from reading print newspapers.  This story is just a regurgitation of ancient news.  Of course, these stories give the people who believe in climate change a chance to sound off.  They believe everything is due to climate change (including their ingrown toenails & hemorrhoids).

Funny, I would have expected such an article from a meteorologist.. But hey, this is Thailand.. maybe economists study meteorology ???... I am looking forward to an economic assessment by a meteorologist...

climatologist rather than meteorologist

It has an economic impact too

Nothing will be done as once it happens, Thais will cry and expect the Western world  to bail them out. A smart move that will make Thai currency stronger at arround 10 baht per UK pound and probably 5 baht per 1 Aussie dollar.

l have been hearing this same old statement being made since I first got involved with Thais and Thailand 45 years ago.  "By the year 2000 Bangkok will be flooded" was the warning cry back then.  Bangkok is still here and not flooded.

I guess the Obama's will need to leave their Martha Vineyards sea level property and move to Boulder Colorado.  Once you see the Obama's leave, then you'll know Bangkok is doomed for sure.  Until then?

People who are very rich can afford to defend their properties with dykes and seawalls, the ordinary Joe can't. That point seems to be missed by posters talking about how the rich are buying waterfront property.

In 2010 parts of Bangkok were up to a metre below sea level, in 2024 parts of Bangkok are still up to a metre below sea level.

IIRC the Bangkok floods of 2011 put half the city under water. The only safe place to park was on the overpasses. That was storm Nock-Ten.

The laws of thermodynamics say storms will get more intense. If you find a way to beat those laws, I'll be the first to nominate you for a Nobel Prize in physics.

Did the sea move up or down?  Not noticed any difference down on the coast here!

In 2039 those losers who stayed in Thailand on COVID extensions will be able to say the same.

I was there during COVID.

So cool.

The half that was lower than the water level.

I had a flight to Melbourne booked after landing at Don Muang in the morning.

The airline ferried us to a hotel for two days because Suvarnabhumi was inaccessible.

I read yesterday in the Guardian about Antartica where and iceberg the size of Britain cleaved off and is melting--They said it would raise sea levels by 10 to 30 feet

Have you ever filled a glass up with Ice Cubes---then water to the very top, and watch the ice melt. does it raise the water level over the glass top--------------- No.

Don't you just love all the scaremongering "experts". Now we have an ecomist telling us of the disaster ahead. Who asked for his opinion?

Bangkok was built on a swamp and was called the "Venice of the East" for years because of its watery nature with many canals, streams and the majestic river Chao Phraya running through it. That is why the old Thai style houses have little on the ground floor and living and sleeping areas began 3m higher.

In general the floods subside almost as quickly as they arrive, however it is always important to properly maintain and upgrade water management schemes as and when it is possible.

It couldn't happen to a nicer place. My God but I loathe Bangkok...it is an evil, smelly, dirty, hot toilet that you feel sick even taking a dump in.

I read yesterday in the Guardian about Antartica where and iceberg the size of Britain cleaved off and is melting. They said it would raise sea levels by 10 to 30 feet (which I don't believe)  but even a 5 feet rise would re-contour the coastlines of the earth.

So gingers crossed that a modest and slow rise in sea levels to wipe this vile and evil travesty of a city off the face of the earth, and a let's have mass exodus of people to the North and North East so that house prices go up.

Here's a tip: never believe what you read in the socialist rag called The Guardian. It even prints a weekly column correcting all the mistakes it makes every week.

Is the smart money moving to just outside BKK or all the way to Korat I wonder?

It already has, after the last big floods in Bangkok, people moved to Khow Yai and surrounding area.

It will not only be Bangkok that will kop it, but I am also in Lopburi province, 140 Km north of Bangkok, and we are only 56 foot above sea level, and they are places lower than this.

There's a map available on the internet that shows how variable sea level is over all of Bangkok.

Also, if you live by the coast but in an elevated place, say with a cliff between you and the sea, the rising sea level won't be so obvious.

If climate change does exist I put it squarely down to overpopulation. The world's population has quadrupled since 1900. Capitalism will always want more, but there's only so much greed the planet can take.
