Man Shoots and Kills Brother-in-Law Over Land Inheritance Dispute

A fatal family feud over inherited land led to the tragic death of 57-year-old Mr. Phongsak (last name withheld), who was shot and killed by his brother-in-law, Mr. Manoon, aged 62, in Phatthalung province.

 

The incident occurred around 11:50 on September 12. Police from Khuan Khanun Station, together with forensic officers and rescue personnel, were dispatched to the scene in front of a house in Moo 16, Cha Muang sub-district, Khuan Khanun district. The victim was found lying next to his pickup truck, with multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen, right upper arm, and left leg, caused by a long-barreled shotgun. Investigators recovered shotgun pellets and found damage to the house window screen and louvers, evidence of the gunfire.

 

 

The shooter, Mr. Manoon, the victim's brother-in-law and owner of the house, surrendered to the police shortly after the shooting. According to initial reports, the victim had driven his pickup to the house and was shot by Mr. Manoon as he exited the vehicle. The shooter fired through a window, fatally wounding Mr. Phongsak.

 

Mrs. Sumitra, 67, wife of the shooter, stated that she was doing laundry at the time of the incident and did not hear any argument due to the noise from the washing machine. She only heard a single gunshot and rushed to investigate, only to be stopped by her husband, who confessed, "I've shot your brother." Shocked, she discovered her brother lying dead next to the truck.

 

The dispute stemmed from a long-standing conflict over inherited land. Mrs. Sumitra explained that her family had already transferred ownership of one plot, about 4 rai, to the victim. However, Mr. Phongsak had been pressuring them to transfer a second plot, approximately 7 rai, which had been mortgaged to the bank. Unable to meet his demands, tensions escalated over the years, culminating in the fatal confrontation.

 

According to Mrs. Sumitra, Mr. Phongsak had been threatening them, even warning that if the land was not transferred, he would "lay funeral flowers" for the family. He had been visiting the house repeatedly for three days before the shooting, demanding that the land be transferred.

 

Mrs. Nanta, 49, wife of the victim, expressed disbelief that family members could resort to such violence. She revealed that the disputed 7 rai plot included a house, a palm plantation, and a rubber plantation. The shooter's family had mortgaged the land, leading to severe financial trouble. Her husband had been negotiating to claim his rightful share, intending to sell it to help settle the debt. However, the family conflict remained unresolved, and in a final confrontation, her husband was shot and killed. 

 

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
