The number of migrants caught crossing a stretch of the US-Canada border that includes northern New York has skyrocketed — increasing more than 50-fold under the Biden-Harris administration.

This year, illegal crossings surpassed the number for the last 17 years combined.

19,000 unauthorized migrants in fiscal 2024 is nothing when the  big picture of hundreds of thousands is taken as a whole.   What is not mentioned is that many of these  migrants had originally crossed over into Canada during the Covid crackdown and are returning to the USA. Unlike the Mexican border, the USA is not compelled to hold the migrants. There is a safe country agreement with Canada that allows the immediate deportation. The USa catches and gets rid of most of these people with minimal delay.

Up until 2023, the problem was the other way, and Americans laughed at Canada's problem. In the very same Vermont, New York border area  US  border agents were directing migrants into Canada and refusing to intervene. An estimated 300,000+  unauthorized migrants crossed from the USA into Canada in the past few years. The official number since 2017 is 117,000 but those are only the recorded people.

The migrant crisis in Canada is critical. Two provinces take the brunt of the unauthorized migrants, Quebec with 40% and Ontario with 50% of the total. Both are where migrants cross into the USA.  Neither of the two can afford the costs of the hundreds of thousands of non contributing  "refugees".  The prime minister of Quebec is up in arms  about the numbers of  "refugees" and has asked members of the current parliament to  bring down the sitting Liberal minority government. It is no secret he supports the Conservatives who would tighten the border.

Report from a September 12…

U.S. border patrol reports record number of encounters with migrants at the Canadian border.

Experts say organized smugglers are taking advantage of lax Canadian screening.

The above cited article also quotes one Canadian source as saying it's been recent changes to Canada's own immigration policies that have driven the [relatively small -- 19K+ for the past year] influx of illegal Canada to U.S. border crossings.

"NDP immigration critic Jenny Kwan said changes to Canada's immigration policy have helped fuel an exodus to the U.S. of students and temporary foreign workers.

"It is quite possible that people are now finding themselves in this dire situation and looking elsewhere to establish themselves," she said."

From the source:

“U.S. news coverage of the surge in migration over its northern border intensified over the summer. In an interview with Fox News on Aug. 22, after complaining about illegal migration over the southern border, former president Donald Trump said the U.S. now had a problem on the northern border with migrants coming in from Canada”.

Trump was right again!
