The crash occurred on October 15, on the Sa Kaeo provincial road between the permanent border crossing at Ban Khao Din and Khlong Hat (Highway SK.4058). Pol. Lt. Ekkawut Phetsombat of Khlong Hat Police Station responded to reports of a head-on collision involving multiple casualties.

Upon arrival at the scene in Khlong Hat District, authorities discovered a black four-door Isuzu pickup truck, its front severely damaged and blocking the road. Inside the vehicle, rescuers found 68-year-old Mr. Leochai, the driver, injured but clutching his 5-year-old grandson, who was also hurt but still in his arms. In the front passenger seat, Mrs. Somsri, 65, Mr. Leochai’s wife, was also trapped and injured, with another grandson, aged 6, suffering injuries inside the vehicle. Rescue teams rushed all victims to Khlong Hat Hospital.

The other vehicle involved was a gray Toyota car, which had crashed into a sugarcane field beside the road. The driver, Mr. Thanakorn, 41, was found injured and trapped inside his car. He was promptly taken to the hospital.

Tragically, four Cambodian nationals were found dead near the Toyota, having been ejected from the vehicle on impact. The deceased included Mr. Lua, 43, another unidentified man in his 30s, and a 5-year-old Cambodian boy.

Initial investigations revealed that the Toyota sedan, carrying five Cambodian nationals including the driver, had been traveling from the Ban Khao Din border market towards Khlong Hat, while the pickup truck was headed in the opposite direction. The accident took place on a secluded stretch of road lined by sugarcane fields, where the vehicles collided at high speed.

Authorities are continuing to investigate and will interview both drivers before filing any charges.

Tragically? One must assume they were sitting in the cargo area of the pick up. That´s stupidity.

It was a sedan. But tragic anyway.

The article states that the deceased Cambodians (RIP) were travelling in the sedan.

Sorry, did not read correct. Saw now, that they were travelling in the sedan. My bad.

@madone You comment was not included in my apology, as it was a personal attack, which seems to be very common here. Also a false statement, as I never posted anybody deserved to die.

So as the headline says the grandfather was protecting the grandson...

Or was the grandson already sitting on the grandfathers lap while driving?

As fun as it looks I always slightly cringe when I see multiple people bombing down a motorway in the back of a pick up truck. Compete carnage and a horror show when an accident occurs

Me too.  But that's all a lot of people can afford.  It's still probably safer on a per km basis than riding a scooter.

When I was a kid, we rode in the back of pickups all the time.  No room for 5 or 6 of us in the cab.  But that was before seat belt laws, and 4 door pickups.
