If you're over 50 do extension based on retirement.

If the financial requirements are too difficult then use an agent.

Surely moving Thai kids to another country is a bit dramatic..

My children have dual nationality and so do their mother, they choose to stay in Thailand, I am going to write the truth now, i have lived here for more than 20 years, thinking this country will change, never, this country is rotten with lies and corruption.  I will sell up, ex wife and the kids have a home, up to them what they do.  However that said i understand your point, but, why get a retirement visa when i am not retired?  Why have 800K in the bank for this visa when i only need to have 400K for an None O?  I am not a corrupted person, maybe that is why i really want to sell up!  THINK ABOUT IT?  THANKS.

Have you remarried?

Having lived in Thailand for 20 years you would be well aware of income method option for extensions based on retirement.

Even though it requires forward planning as UK embassy does not income letter any more.

65k per month is hardly tying up money.

I have seen this blind-spot posted before.  For "the rest of us," 65K/mo is 2x more than needed to support a family of 4 comfortably in Thailand - and 3x more than needed to support a single "retired" person here comfortably.  All spending above that is on luxuries/extras.

65k you say is twice what is required for 2 school kids and parents to live comfortably.

More like Floyd Comfortably Numb

That's not the point. The point is  income method avoids having funds tied up in bank

I understand that some wealthier people view how other people live in such terms.  Many Thais live on a fraction of what I do, but I don't "look down" on them for this.  They are happier than most of my compatriots, in fact.

Expecting someone to transfer that amount every month is excessive for many who live here, so to assume everyone can is the "blind spot" to which I am referring.

I think being retired I am living more modestly than before but this statement is insane. No way in h*ll a family with 2 kids can live on 1/3 of $65,000.  That is if you want any kind of life at all.

1/2 for a family, is what I wrote.  32.5K/mo?  No problem.
The 1/3 was for a single person.

Edit: "Kind of Life" is the key.  What activities are chosen beyond the basics?  Does the kid need the latest iPhone to be cool?  etc.

Further posts regarding monthly budgets required to live in Thailand will be removed as off topic.

That's a very old chestnut.

I do my extensions in hua hin , I have to take birth certificate, divorce certificate, son, bank details, court paper to prove sole custody, and a witness nearly every time now.

Indeed. And there in is the problem.

The OP is married not divorced.

Child does not live with him and he does not have sole custody.

if not divorced, and kid not living with you at least part time (photos as proof) and a home visit, you might end up with no visa...

ps, you don't need SOLE custody, almost no judge agrees to this... you need shared custody at least...

Sounds about right, when i got divorced i insisted on joint custody, ex did not want me to have it, but i got it, good job i did as the last time i applied for a 90 day non o they asked me for this!  Like i have said before, looks like tourists are welcome, expats not so much, think about how much expats bring to this country!

I agree, correct information, i should know as i have experienced this!  Just to add you can get divorced in 20 min at the amphur, cheap, easy, no, contest, just make sure you have a signed divorce agreement, drafted by a lawyer and officially translated.  Best you can do, good luck.

Get a lawyer to draft a divorce memorandum, agreement, get it translated, ask your wife if she agrees, if so go to the amphur and 20 min later you are free and clear to apply for your visa, you get the documents their an then, you will still have to jump through some hoops at immigration, but you can as i have.  Oh, very important, remember to get joint custody!!!

The interesting thing is that the OP stated the following......

"Now, I have been in contact with my local immigration. They have been told the facts of my particular case. I have been told that i may have to bring my wife to immigration with me on the day........I have the 400,000 Baht in my account, I have all the required paperwork.....he is legally my son...."

Interesting that immigration did not mention divorce and joint custody.

Why would immigration want to make life easy?

Update....

I was rejected for supporting my child. I was told it had to be a marriage visa, or I needed to divorce my wife and sort out custody issues...so......

3 days ago I went back to my wife and asked again if she would give me a divorce. I asked if we can do it the easy way, not including lawyers etc. Bear in mind the last time I asked her, about 1 year ago she punched me in the head. This time it was much more subdued. She gave me some stipulations which were actually pretty reasonable. I agreed.

Yesterday we went to the Amphur office and got divorced. It cost precisely nothing....

Fast forward to today and I went into immigration and got another 2 month extension based on 'visiting family' I will be going back to extend it for a year next week. I have already spoken (with the help of my lady friend) to someone we are 'friendly' with in immigration. Now that I am divorced and custody is a clear 50/50 there should be no problem.

It took panic stations to get me to really try and communicate with my ex. We had been separated for almost 4 years. I want to be back on an 'O' visa and not have my balls to the wall with a NON B, at the whim of a Thai school etc. I have had some employers try to tell me you cannot work with a NON O. I think some like the power having a NON B has over you. I do not want to have to leave the country and be a bloody tourist again just because I am in between jobs....FOOK DAT!  I will use the supporting of a Thai child as a reason for this years extension. The money is still in the bank....

I fully intend to marry again....foolhardy? I have known the lady for a decade. She is a salt of the earth type. At some point I will change the reason for extension from supporting a child to marriage...

Interesting fact: A man can divorce and get married again immediately in Thailand. A woman has to wait 1 year. For a farang I need some extra paperwork from my embassy....but it wouldn't take too long.

The moral to the story???? I dragged my feet for too long. You have to quickly pull out the splinter even though it will hurt. You have to get all your ducks in a row...blah blah blah.

That's good...........:clap2:

Well done.

Think earlier posts advised that while still married you cannot opt to do extensions based on support of Thai child.

I understand immigration on that.

Really good to see it seems to getting to a "settlement"

Good luck

Yes, all is settled. Time to move on. Work permit....5 year teachers licence renewal and I will be in a similar position to what I was a few years back........just that bit more secure.

Cheers all. I hope this topic will be of use in future to anyone else in my position. Things are not always clear here in Thailand....to put it mildly.
