Supposedly for the Paperless, but they need another sheet of paper to show where you to sit on the plane LOL.

I watched the attached video carefully.

The passengers are  still issued with their boarding passes.

And scan it with  the reader at the boarding gate. 0:24

 

The fact:

The Boarding Pass still remains.

Facial inspection at the boarding gate is automated.

So it can skip old method: ID inspection by manpower.

Truly misleading Headline.

Here we go! first facial recognition at airports, then very soon we will have the new "Chinese system" of a surveillance state all over the land! This is really going the path nobody wants! WAKE UP! And what chaos will we see if this system suddenly should break down???? I miss some intelligent people in power....😣

You do know that Thailand immigration has been using facial recognition for some years now. Why do you think they take your photograph. They also collect your fingerprints.  

Nothing will happen if the system "breaks" down. What do they do now  when the data system is disrupted at immigration?

If there is a data system disruption at the gate, the Gate agents will verify passengers themselves by doing what they do now. You will still be issued a  boarding pass.  Most passengers opt for the electronic boarding passes. However, you will still be able to print a BP at your home or at an airport kiosk. R-e-l-a-x.  It will be alright.

Security have always accepted the printed A4 version.

I usually fly Thai Air domestically and like you I check in online.  Sometimes I print out my boarding pass but many times I have it emailed to me and I only have it on my phone.  Not sure how this system will work for me but I guess I’ll find out next week when I fly from Chiang Rai to Bangkok since CR airport is on the list.

I usually do the same. Check in online-no checked baggage, and straight to the gate. Queuing at the check in counter for a facial scan will increase my travel time.

No... but it was a workd wide issue..due to the algorithms not being trained on dark skinned people.

They've been installed, but it will be up to each airline as to whether to use them, since the system may or may not mesh with their systems and procedures. I've actually seen FR readers at gates at many airports around the world for several years now, but only used them for boarding once. 

 

But you're quite correct that in theory FR could be used for immigration and boarding as well as security - those functions just aren't under the full control of AoT.
