Rice Farmer's Tragic End: A Tale of Diligence and Loss

In a sorrowful incident, a 57-year-old man named Suwan was found deceased in a paddy field in Baan Don Po Daeng, Udon Thani province. His body was discovered on November 7th, following his solo effort to harvest rice. Authorities suspect that Suwan's death may have been caused by a pre-existing health condition, marked by frequent complaints of chest pain.

 

Upon notification, Police Officer Suk-In Rachankaew, alongside medical personnel and rescue workers from the Sawang Metha Tham Foundation, promptly arrived at the scene. Suwan's body was discovered cold among the ripening rice, still clutching a sickle — a poignant image of his final moments.

 

Medical examination estimates Suwan had been deceased for seven to eight hours before being found by a local woman named Paw. Suwan's relatives were not surprised by his passing due to his known health issues, indicating no foul play was suspected.

 

Prayad, the owner of the rice field, recounted Suwan’s agreement to harvest two rai of rice for 500 baht, which he opted to receive in rice rather than cash to support his elderly mother. Known as a diligent worker, Suwan was devoted to aiding his mother, reflecting meaningful dedication amidst adversity.

 

The community was shocked by the discovery, particularly Paw, who found Suwan's body. Initially terrified, her instincts led her to flee, but she soon composed herself to inform the authorities, ensuring Suwan received the attention he deserved.

 

As the local community reflects on the loss, Suwan is remembered for his unwavering work ethic and deep care for his family, a humble man whose labour was driven by love and commitment.

Where was the local community to help the farmer knowing his hardships? But maybe providing some occasional volunteer help would have prevented this tragedy - but volunteer without bring paid? Inconceivable.

57 is a bit early to go , but , at least , the end of his earthly existence came fast , hope he did not suffer .

Cutting 3200 square meters of standing rice solo and by hand for 500 baht would be a challenge for even a strong man. I shake my head in admiration and sympathy when I am in rural areas at harvest time and see small holders in their fields working at this back-breaking task and think myself very fortunate.
