An American passport holder can visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in a 180 day period, a visa is not required.

By traveling early in the year you won’t need to pay for the ETIAS.  According to the article it will be implemented sometime next year.

"How Much Does ETIAS Cost? The ETIAS application fee is 7 EUROS for applicants aged between 18 to 70 years. However, travelers under 18 or over 70 years old are exempt from paying the fee. Debit and credit card payments are accepted for the application fee."

 

If 7 Euros breaks you budget - stay home.

Or wait till you are 70 😉
