One also suspects that any such attack on a Russian city will result in a more unpleasant attack on Kiev than those currently happening.

Whatever the reason for the authorisation, it isn't going to win the war for Zelensky, but it will result in more deaths than without.

President Joe Biden has authorized the use of U.S.-supplied long-range missiles by Ukraine to strike even deeper inside Russia

The neocons don’t care. They are willing to fight to the last Ukrainian just to weaken Russia and then to take on China next. Only problem for them is that instead of getting weaker, they (Russia) are actually getting stronger.

Too little, too late. Biden should not have allowed himself to be deterred by Putin’s bogus “red lines”.

You are right about the bogus “red lines”. Putin never said that long range missiles were a red line. This is merely something the western msm made up, along with multiple other bogus red lines.

It is not simply, just a question of allowing use.

Putin has previously said that giving Ukraine the green light on missile use would effectively mean that the U.S. and NATO are "in the war."

"Flight assignments for these missile systems can, in fact, only be entered by military personnel from NATO countries. Ukrainian servicemen cannot do this. And therefore, it is not a question of allowing the Ukrainian regime to strike Russia with these weapons or not. It is a question of making a decision whether NATO countries directly participate in the military conflict or not," Putin said in September.

"If this decision is made, it will mean nothing less than the direct participation of NATO countries, the United States, and European countries, in the war in Ukraine," he added.

It would take a matter of hours to teach Ukrainian crews to programme and launch these weapons, even whilst Kiev and other Ukrainian cities are under a daily barrage of missile and drone attacks, aimed at destroying the power grid as winter approaches!

I'm pretty sure it's not that simple.  These are precision weapons that require satellite use and addition infrastructure as part of the targeting process.  Ukraine doesn't control any of that.

One wonders if Trump was consulted, but one suspects it's Biden laying a booby trap for Trump by escalating the war before he leaves office.

You can absolutely bet that this escalation isn't really about Ukraine "winning" the war.  There are ulterior motives. The Deep State will do anything to keep Trump from becoming president again.  Anyway, perhaps Putin will show some restraint.  None of this nonsense is necessary and Trump will surely find a way to end the fighting.

He already has. The talk about negotiations only happened after he won.
