The USA also has a plethora of natural disasters - bushfires, hurricanes and tornadoes. That will get worse with Trump environmental policies.

Tell me, who is going to pick your crops after Trump has deported all the illegals?

Yes,well as far as i can see it the government workers that are working in heated or cooled rooms are going to be looking for a job.

Would they make good farmers?Maybe a good way to lose some weight for some .

All joking aside,it is going to be a big mess and soon the people who have elected him will be really sorry for that.

I watched a podcast where it was explained to the host what tariffs really are and how they work.

The host was stunned after he realized it is only going to hurt the American consumers!

I was stunned also,by the lack of knowledge of a lot of Americans.

The people who call them selves MAGA will soon realize they ffd up big time.

Just following a slogan and blindly repeating it because that is all you understand and have no ideas of your own will not make America great again!

Very soon these people will be very tired of winning!

They screech, and cave in. Mexico will stop the caravans. Watching shaky Trudeau quake on TV was wonderful.

BTW the 25% threatened tariff means possible higher costs to American consumers in a micro sense, but means destruction of the Canadian and Mexico economy. Of course they will cave.

Not for millions of Thai people it isn’t.

Do you think that's because of tax on imported foreign goods?

They've had trump for 4 years already, they were better off then than Biden. So your post is nonsense

I think it has a lot to do with protected cartels, one in particular.

Trumps rubes have yet to learn who it is that pays tariffs.

They won't pay import tariffs on domestically produced goods.

Hence that's what American people will buy more of, and the American economy will flourish, allowing for lower taxes, lower prices and better services.

Irony: Foreign Leftists with no knowledge of how things work in the USA, who dont live there, and have never been there, and who live in a Leftist bubble in a country where even the minimal rights to freedom allowed are guaranteed by American taxpayers calling us "Rubes".

We are rubes for protecting y'all. My money. Maybe its time to withdraw from Nato and see how y'all like paying for your own protection. Cut those 6 week holidays down.

So not tariffs on imported foreign goods then...

I rarely hear the neighbours up at my farm complaining about the price of Cabernet Sauvignon and Camembert.

So you accept your statement regarding Thailand being pretty cheap to live is demonstrably ill informed  and that for millions of Thai people the cost of living here is not cheap?!

No I do not accept that. Thailand is very cheap to live. It's certainly a lot cheaper than America or the UK, despite Thailand having huge import tariffs on many foreign goods.

You are trying to deflect to the fact that wages are low for many Thai people which is a different subject and nothing to do with import tariffs on foreign goods (the subject of the thread).

It's already done.Mexico and Canada agree to help. Biden used to be mocked as the migrant president in Latin America. Nobody could make sense of his desire to let all and sundry in at any cost. They understand trump's objectives because they align with thoseof the USA, Mexico and Canada..

It is not done. The reality is that Trump is full of sh*t.

The total amount of unauthorized  migrants entering from Canada is the equivalent of a weekend's worth on the southern border. Under the safe country agreement, anyone caught can be sent back to canada  as soon as they are apprehended. There are also migrants entering Canada from the USA. The bigger problem is the flow of firearms, drugs and tobacco from the USA into Canada.

Trump wants to put 25% tariffs on Canadian imports from Canada, but he wants to exempt Canadian imports. Currently, the over half of all US oil imports come from Canada. 4.42 million barrels a day. Canada can put a tariff on the exports. Yes, the US tariffs will hurt Canada, but once Canada retaliates with tariffs on US goods, watch US housing prices increase, and shortages to occur in some industries. US farmers will not be thrilled when Canadians stop buying US produce and switch to other suppliers. 30+ states have Canada as their largest trading partners.

The USA blames Mexico for its problem at the border. it's a made in USA problem,. Someone is buying the drugs from Mexico and hiring the  unauthorized migrants. Almost all of the firearms seized in Mexico come from the USA. There has been a reduction of migrants at the US border since last June. In fact the problem isn't with new migrants, but rests with the population already in the USA.

No I’m simply calling out your patently ill informed statement.

As for relative costs, they are of no relevance to the millions of Thai who don’t find living cheap.

Ask your neighbors 😉

While being pretty fluent in spoken Thai, the Issan dialect does present some difficulties occasionally but I am quickly coming to grips with it.

Yes it's a wonderful hobby. Producing organic food is very rewarding and the locals appreciate the money I have invested in the community.

Nonsense. I was talking about absolute costs, not relative costs. You are trying to deflect again.

The reason it may be "relatively" high for the poorest in society is due to low wages, nothing to do with import tariffs on foreign goods (the subject of this thread).

92 Percent of Trump’s China Tariff Proceeds Has Gone to Bail Out Angry Farmers

In 2018 and ’19, Trump authorized payments to U.S. farmers of $28 billion to offset their losses from Chinese trade retaliation. This year, with farmers struggling under the twin crises of the trade war and the pandemic, bailouts have soared way higher. Trump promised angry farmers another $19 billion in April and $14 billion in September—bringing his bailouts to a grand total of $61 billion. He has pledged to continue these bailouts until the trade war ends.

That trade war has cost U.S. companies many billions in new import taxes (while undermining their competitiveness and increasing consumer prices), yet it has earned the government far less. As the chart above shows, payouts to farmers battered by Chinese retaliation have eaten up over 92 percent of the trade-war tax proceeds.

And what's up with Canada? Are illegals and drugs flowing in over our northern border?

Bottom line: you gonna kill the patient.

Agree. The patient will get a double whammy from inflation as well as rate hikes by FED. It will be a massive hit on borrowing costs for consumers and businesses and slow the economy. I still can't make the connection between higher tariffs to stop fentanyl. Must be a new economic theory from Trump U.

Then why are they talking about retaliatory measures?

What happens to American gas prices when Trump has a 25% tariff on the oil imported from Canada? What happens to  sales of American cars when Canada puts a 25% tariff on them?

Wishful thinking on your part, or an overdose of Trump Kool-Aid.

You would think folks remember the numerous topics here where the Pinky-in-the-air crowd complains about Tariffs on their imported wine...

The best part about the Trump Haters, Tariff edition is that they focus on the Micro of the event/policy rather than the macro effect.

For those one or two of you whose intellectual curiosity I challenge, I would note that the focus on the micro rather than the macro allows the revolutionary movement to Socialism the philosophic flexibility to utilize small battles. The old revolutionary slogan, Think Global, Act Local is a perfect example. Thus, you get the incongruence of Leftists calling Tariffs an interference in the market, while acting to interfere in the market, or indeed, control the market as they did in National Socialist Germany or Soviet Russia.

Alot of hoping that trump will wreck the economy. Most likely scenario is that inflation will be at a normal level for the next four years. Not like it matters to anyone here whos not living in america. America bashers will have not much to talk about soon

Most Trump voters don't know what tariffs are and how they work.

Arguably Trump doesn’t either.

They do want lower prices.

Trump's tariff policies bring the opposite.

Trump 1.0 btw resulted in loss of manufacturing jobs.

We can't stop fentanyl usage/demand. We can't stop (all) fentanyl being smuggled in. So Trump wants Mexico and Canada to do this for us. Maybe his version of outsourcing?

I think most fentanyl is produced in Mexico with precursors from China?

Please show facts that demonstrate "most" Trump voters are ignorant of tariffs, especially vis a vis Democrat voters.

Please show us how Trump doesnt understand Tariffs

Please show us how Trumps tariffs brought higher prices in the past in a macroeconomic sense.

Please advise as to what other factors may have contributed to a loss of manufacturing jobs (if true) under Trump.

Of course, if you are just parroting more lies and Leftist propaganda, no need to respond. We dont expect it anyway.

And again, spewing hate towards Trump voters

Tariffs have been used by many U.S. presidents in the past, often with mixed or negative results. Here are a few examples:
Note the key words "limited impact", "historians argue that they contributed to the Great Depression" and "unintended consequences, including higher prices for consumers and retaliation". You reap what you sow.

1. In 2009, President Obama imposed a 35% tariff on tires imported from China, in response to concerns from the United Steelworkers Union about job losses in the domestic tire industry. The tariffs were intended to protect American jobs and boost domestic production, but some studies suggest they may have had limited impact.

2. In the early 20th century, the U.S. imposed a series of tariffs to protect domestic industries and generate revenue. These included the Fordney-McCumber Tariff of 1922, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff of 1930, and the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act of 1934. These tariffs had varying impacts on the U.S. economy, and some historians argue that they contributed to the Great Depression.

3. In the 1980s, President Reagan imposed tariffs on Japanese motorcycles and semiconductors, in an effort to protect American industries and reduce the trade deficit. However, these tariffs also had unintended consequences, including higher prices for consumers and retaliation from Japan.
