December 6, 20241 yr I am looking for an ipad, cheap, second hand or refurbished. I only want it for watching movies, tv shows for when I'm traveling. I know nothing about them at all. Can you put an USB stick with movies etc put on them into an ipad? I do not need one for anything else. Any ideas where to look?

(if in Bangkok - MBK is worth a visit) - you could take your Thumb drive with you and ask them to show you how to watch movie on the iPad before making the purchase. In answer to your question - yes its possible to watch movies from a USB drive on an iPad. I'd recommend an iPad 10th Gen (see here) - which second hand will set you back around 10,000 baht. The reason I recommend the 10th Gen is because its USB-C (which also helps with power), if you get an older iPad with a Lightening port, you may need an adapter and also an external power source (See here) if thats too expensive, you may consider an Amazon Fire for about 6000 baht. With the iPad You can also have Netflix / Prime / Disney etc... and 'download movies' to watch offline. Edited December 6, 20241 yr by richard_smith237

Thanks Richard, all I really need is being able to watch my own downloaded movies and TV shows on the plane, train or bus.

I do the same - I travel so much I've usually already seen anything I want to watch thats on the inflight entertainment. So... I have netflix / Prime / Disney+ downloaded and watch that. But.. you want to do something slightly different and watch from your thumb drive, or copy files from a thumb drive to a 'file location' on the tablet - I think any tablet will be able to do this, it doesn't necessarily need to be an iPad.

I want to do the same as I would with a laptop, have a couple of movies I have downloaded and put on an UBS drive, just plug it in and play one. I don't even know what a thumb drive is.

While you certainly can do that process and it will work, my preferred method is to use either VLC (it’s free) or GoodReader (a paid app) and to download the movies onto the iPad directly. 1 movie is likely to be between 800Mb and 2Gb possibly less. The advantage of moving the files onto the iPad is that any USB drive can get knocked and easily damaged, also that you can transfer the files via WiFi (though it’s not so fast) also you can use an older iPad rather than needing a USB C one Edited December 7, 20241 yr by sometimewoodworker
