Bump above outer ankle bone, what is it?

Recommended Posts

I noticed about a week ago I've got this bump above my ankle bone, maybe 3cm in diameter. When I press it, it goes inwards then comes back to it's original shape when I release it. There's no pain at all. I've attached a picture. Anyone have any idea what it is?

If it moves easily and feels sort of rubbery (and painless) then may be a lipoma. Harmless if so.

Lipoma was also what I thought when I Googled the possible things it could be, as well as a possible cyst.

Ganglion cyst. Not cancerous.

Some ganglion cysts go away on their own, while others remain small and cause no problems

Ganglion cyst - it says it can be caused by excessive use of the joint. I sprained my other ankle and had to hop around and bear full weight on the good leg for a number of days. I think this lump developed around this time, but I'm not 100% certain as I didn't really pay any attention to my ankles prior.

If I were to get this checked out at a hospital, which department would I go to see at the hospital?

Would Pattaya Memorial or Pattaya International be best to go to for checking this out? Anyone have any ideas?

Start with an orthopedic doctor.

Either of the hospitals mentioned would be fine.

Whichever department reception, where you will have to register, tells you to go to.

What tests would typically be expected? Just an Xray?

In general, out of Memorial and International, anyone knows which one is usually better out of the two? What about for emergencies, which out of the two hospital is best?

If  it is a ganglion cyst or lipoma, likely needs just a brief physical exam.  It then becomes a question of whether you want to have it surgically removed.

All hospitals have both good and not so good doctors and it is the  choice of doctor, not hospital, that matters.

Pattaya Memorial and PIH are both quite small so would not be best choice in an actual emergency.  For that I woukd suggest Ban Lamung hosputal or -- if well insured or wealthy - Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.

Queen Sirikit Naval Hospital in Sattahip and Queen Savang Memirial Hosp (Red Cross Hosp) in Sri Racha are also good options but further from Pattsya do fistance needs yo be considered.
