Foreign Tour Guides Falsely Profiting from Thai Tourism Sector
File photo for reference only Thailand's tourism sector faces a growing challenge as illegal foreign tour guides infiltrate the industry, exploiting extended visa-free stays. This raises alarms among experts and local authorities, who highlight undue profits being siphoned by these unauthorised operators. The Professional Tourist Guides Association of Thailand recently spotlighted incidents such as a Russian guide illicitly leading tours in the Similan Islands, compromising safety and flouting national park rules. Such activities not only endanger tourists but also disrupt the nation's tourism-driven economy. With a policy allowing 60-day visa-free stays for visitors from 93 countries, the system is being manipulated, facilitating illegal work practices. Paisarn Suethanuwong, part of the association's committee, underscored how these foreign entities now run businesses in top destinations like Bangkok and Phuket, catering primarily to Chinese, Russian, Indian, and South Korean tourists. Estimated losses from these illicit operations range from 10 to 100 billion baht, as the tourism income leaks abroad rather than benefiting the local economy. With around 50,000 to 60,000 licensed Thai guides, the community aims to safeguard their livelihoods against unqualified, foreign competition. While Paisarn concedes that demand may outstrip supply for certain languages, the solution, he argues, is increased collaboration—not illegal employment. He calls on the government to enforce regulations more stringently and facilitate opportunities for local guides, thus ensuring sustainable tourism growth with integrity. -- 2024-12-19 -
