Two Dead as Boat Capsizes in Kathu Pond, Phuket

An incident occurred on the evening of 22 December when a fibre boat carrying three young men capsized in a large pond in Soi Bo Pla Ta Daet, Moo 1, Kathu subdistrict. Two men, aged 18 and 19, drowned, while the third managed to swim to safety.

 

Police from Kathu Police Station and the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation rescue team were alerted to the incident at around 18.00. Upon arrival, they found a crowd of concerned onlookers gathered near the pond, which has a depth of approximately 6-7 metres.

 

Rescue divers deployed inflatable boats and underwater search equipment to locate the victims. The search was conducted in challenging conditions as nightfall necessitated the use of additional lighting. 

 

After around 40 minutes of searching, the rescue team recovered the bodies of both men from the middle of the pond, not far from where the boat had capsized. Their remains were transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further procedures.

 

According to initial reports, the three men, all Myanmar nationals, had been rowing the fibre boat for leisure when it overturned in the middle of the pond. While one managed to swim ashore in an exhausted but conscious state, the other two sank and did not resurface.

 

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Even the populations of nieghbouring nations can NOT boast the basic survival floating capability in deep water.

That despite residential location to seaside occupational  dependence. Indonesia a prime example..

Of course the accident was not avoidable to those who were involved.
