Refractive Lens Exchange surgery recommendations.

Recommended Posts

Hello lovely people,

I am in the market for getting Refractive Lens Exchange surgery done, I have been in contact with all of the obvious hospitals in Bangkok and the prices i have been quoted are on par with UK prices, up to 190,000 per eye in some places. 🙄

Has anyone found more reasonable prices elsewhere please? and could you give me your experience of how your vision is now?

I fully understand the procedure so i don't need any info on that or recovery times etc,

I am just basically looking for prices and recommendations of hospitals anywhere in Thailand.

Many thanks.

I obviously do not know your background for this need and I am not a medical expert but this may help

I had my lenses replaced (RLE) at Bangkok Hospital Phuket and the cost was nothing like 190,000 baht per eye.

I had the 'Bright View' procedure with tri-focal lenses.

I paid about 230,000 baht last year for both eyes. No discounts for long term foreign residents.

I found a very good residence within walking distance (HOMA) where, again, prices were very reasonable.

In spite of the fact that the specialist (Dr Captain) looks about 16, I found that the whole experience was the most professional that I have ever come across. Reception staff, medical staff - all were outstanding.

Spouse and I had Supersight surgery done at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya earlier this year.  Very pleased with the result and the whole process, which involved an overnight stay in a private room at the hospital and good follow-up care.   My insurance paid for my procedure, which would have cost me 300,000 baht for both eyes.

My friend paid out of pocket there last month and it was 250,000 baht so 300,000 with insurance sounds about right for both eyes. Plus you can get them adjusted if you need to for free. Dr. Somchai is very good and a couple other friends have had it done 10+ years ago and one just went to the doctor because one of his eyes didn’t feel right. He said he went in, the doctor put drops in his eyes and did a little fix. Took about 2 minutes to do and he wasn’t charged and came home. Glad you are doing your research. Just make sure that you find a doctor that does the Super Site surgery and has a lot of experience and positive feedback and results.

I agree.  Dr. Somchai is excellent.   I investigated lasik in the US about 15 years ago and was told with my vision I would still need to use glasses either for distance or close-up.  Passed on doing it.  Came to Thailand in 2010 and spouse and I both had lasik around 2012 with Dr. Somchai.  He was able to do my lasik so I had good vision both for distance and close-up.  No glasses needed at all.   Twelve years later, our vision had deteriorated a bit so we did the Supersight and we're both very happy with the results.   Spouse's Supersight was around 250,000 baht and mine was more because I needed a different kind of lens, if I'm remembering correctly.

 Thanks,

Thats really good to hear as i have just contacted Bangkok Hospital Phuket for a quote.

230,000 sounds much more reasonable, you are not the first recommendation for Dr. captain that i have received so thats very reassuring,  thanks for replying.

Do you get halos around lights at night? particularly with oncoming car headlights?

There isn't an age limit.  Most who have it done like me, have always needed spectacles to see properly and then get cataracts.  At that point you have the lens replacements that include the reading component.  Cataracts gone and back to being a teenager in that you can read without spectacles again.  Note that the lens implants cost more to have the reading component included and in the UK the NHS doesn't fit those as they think that reading is just a luxury.

If you were to have it done then you would never suffer from cataracts and could read without spectacles.  Bit much just for that and not worth either the risk or the cost doing it in my opinion.  But I couldn't see and had bad astigmatism plus other problems so that all cost a lot more to sort out in total, but was worth it to me.
