Koh Phangan Boat Operators Demand Mid-Journey Payments From Tourists
Stopping the boat halfway though the journey is clearly extortion. Charging 400 baht per passenger is clearly a rip-off. Money is either paid when boarding or when alighting - it can't be any simpler than that. IF the boat pilot has encountered passengers fleeing in the past, the simple solution is to charge on boarding - and charge the agreed 'normal fare'. OF course - there is always a back story: Whenever transport is involved in Thailand there is always a potential scam. Its happened so many times: i.e. - Bus station to boat Pier: 200 baht.... at arrival the driver demands 200 baht each... - Or, they take you to a different (closed pier), and then claim a misunderstanding and ask for more to take to the correct pier. - Or, they take you half way, and then get you to change vehicles, then the new driver wants payment (and the other driver has already left). .... All these scams used to be common and it doesn't surprise me one bit that similar scams exist with longtail boats. -

Smoking in public
And it is getting worse. Smoking at public places has escalated. At ferry terminal, the beaches, at restaurants (which I did not see last year. At the bars yes, but normal restaurants no. We come with family and kids, and nobody give a <deleted>. It is normal now, and the tourists take it for granted, this is legal, or there is no consequences due to smoking in public. The average thais? What do they think about it? How will this impact the future regulations of legal weed in Thailand? -

Twice-per-second Bleeping Bird: What's it good for?
Seems to me you have what I call a gawu bird, but the real name is here. Sadly two are now near my house as well. Wife can shut them up with a slingshot. Nature’s Alarm Clock A.k.a That F$%#ing Annoying Bird. That is the Asian Koel. If you don’t live in Asia it won’t mean much to you. If you do then you will probably have heard these birds which are especially vocal during mating season. And right now it’s the time of year for Koh Chang’s horny Asian Koel population to make their voice heard. It’s all very nice being woken up by the sound of bird calls when they are of the cute, tweeting variety. But, it’s an entirely different matter when you have a loud, repetitive ‘Koo-Ooooo’ at 4am in the morning. It wouldn’t be so bad if the range of these birds calls was limited to a small area, but it isn’t. You can hear them from a kilometer away. ( They are members of the Cuckoo family ) I’ve heard them in the city centre in Bangkok – above traffic noise. So, you can imagine if you are in quiet surroundings and a lovesick male suddenly pipes up from a tree outside your room, or from a tree 100 metres away, you won’t be getting much sleep. Fortunately, the mating season is only a couple of months long – on Koh Chang from mid-December to February. -
