Elderly Man, 85, Severely Injured After Modified Grinder Slips While Cutting Wood

An 85-year-old man narrowly escaped losing his lower leg after a modified hand grinder slipped from his grip and struck his shin in Rayong. The incident, which caused significant blood loss, occurred on January 2 at the man's home near Ban Khai District.

 

Rescue workers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were alerted to the scene and found Mr San, the injured man, sitting outside his home with a deep laceration to his left shin, fully exposing the bone. He also sustained injuries to his hand. A pool of blood was visible nearby. Rescuers quickly administered first aid to stop the bleeding, immobilised his leg, and transported him to Ban Khai Hospital for emergency treatment.

 

Mr San explained that he was using a hand grinder, commonly referred to as a "baby grinder" in the area, which he had modified by attaching a circular saw blade to cut wood. While working, the tool slipped from his hand and struck his leg and hand. Struggling to stop the device, he managed to unplug it, preventing further injuries.

 

Mr Jui, 49, a relative of Mr San, said that the use of modified grinders for cutting wood is common in the area, but they are notoriously dangerous. He noted that many incidents involving such tools have been reported, often resulting in serious injuries.

 

A neighbour, Mr Net, 50, was the first to discover Mr San. He said he had been walking over to wish him a Happy New Year when he saw him sitting in a pool of blood. Shocked, he quickly called for emergency assistance.

 

This incident serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the dangers of using power tools for unintended purposes. Users are urged to exercise caution and adhere strictly to manufacturers' guidelines to avoid potentially life-threatening incidents.

The old folk's allowance here is 600 baht per month - if he qualifies.

He was probably doing whatever he can in order to get some cash.

Part of the problem is that companies actually produce aftermarket "blades" to fit 4" Grinders, and in most cases, if not all, these aftermarket versions need the safety guard removed to allow fitment.

Sad incident hope he is ok.

 

Don't you know every Thai man has a grinder.  It is the universal tool from cutting, shaving, digging holes, cutting grass. Hell, it is probably used to cut hair, it is used for everything.   l especially love the noise it makes.

Changing the disc is hardly what I would call a modification.  There are disc's for ceramic tiles , metal and wood.

 

If they want to reduce these accidents they should make it illegal to sell grinders that are not operated by an automatic kill button. That is , as soon as you take your thumb off the operation button the power is cut. My first grinder had this. Nowadays , most of the cheap Chinese generic grinders have a separate toggle switch at the base where the wire goes in. Dangerous because if you drop the grinder it keeps on working.
