Why do so many people blame the driver for the death of the pedestrian? What's the legal speed limit on that road. 50 km/h ?

What are you trying to say? Driving the legal speed limit gives a person the freedom to kill somebody out for a walk?

I have noticed a lot of members following this thread, all of you that are, have you noticed how some members here are going overboard to bury this chap, yes......?

Well the same lot will do the same to you if you have a problem, try to hang you..... 🤔

I tell you why. Because I see a lot of careless foreigners on motorcycles and driving cars in Chiangmai on a daily basis and many of them I see doing far worse stunts than the locals. Some guy jacked up on a dirt bike trying to be cool is what I will assume here until I officially hear something else. You that are in his defense are probably just as careless on the road.

I have ridden here for 20+ years and the number of locals who do not look before they cross the road is astounding. Is it a Buddha thing, do they believe he, or their amulet will protect them? Why is it so common.

Are you sure they are Thai? The locals look. The Chinese do not look and surprisingly more of them don’t get hit.

Yes.

And judging by the way you type it would seem you are too!

Thanks for the confirmation.

You still have to be alert on the crossings as many drivers still don't recognize them.

So true! Tourists come here and don’t bother read the signs or the roads for that matter

Correct but if you break it down, say a 100 each of white people, Thais and Chinese , the Chinese will win at being the worse drivers, second place worst would be the white people then third Thai

I've been driving for 50 years, and professionally for many of them, and have observed the best and the worst driving in many states and a few countries. In all this time, I have noticed, without prejudice, the worst drivers are definitely here, followed by some black women, teens and then older Asians. Lastly there are a few old drivers that aren't bad per se, but drive too slow in places where they should keep up with traffic, and this causes problems.

Very unlikely there's any video evidence unless it was  a security camera on a home. They didn't say where exactly this happened but you can kind of see from the picture it was a small 2 lane road.

Here's a random but representative road in Mae On district. As seen on the map this is a very rural area next to the mountains. These dirt bikes amongst others love speeding through the little villages on their day trips. The victim could have been some elderly women who isn't prepared to deal with high speed traffic.

The one thing we DO know is that you should always be respectful and never drive fast in residential zones until you're out on the open road. Even if  you hit someone and it was their fault the Thais likely won't care and expect you to watch out for others, regardless of what they do.

Look how they live right on the side of the road. They step one foot outside and they're on the road. It's an accident waiting to happen so be careful.

I have driven up Mae Kampong a number of times and always see impatient foreigners on motorcycles. Mae On is usually slow but this time of year it is very crowded with tourists and impatient people.

There was a case around 1 year ago on the news on here with CCTV, a middle aged Thai woman running across the road to a restaurant into the path of a young Thai man, he came off and died (no helmet). I'm pretty sure it was seen as her fault.

She went half way across, then ran back to the car, then ran out again.

All your “possibilities” pointed to your fellow countryman being innocent and the poor dead being blamed.

You must take a course on comprehending MalcomB. I again, didn't say anyone was in the wrong or right. I listed possibilities, which mean things that might have happened. It looks like you think I'm sticking up for an American just because. And blaming the local just because. No.

Showing remorse should help.  I wish the concept of "restorative justice" were implemented more widely.  If ever there was a case for it, this is it.

Even for the good actors? No, jail rot.

It does show a lack of concern not only of others lives but of their own, and the lack of enforcement adds to this. It also tells a lot about a people by the way they treat their children and animals.

It's a dirt bike, so probably shouldn't even have been on the road.

You do realize that they make road legal dirt bikes as well, yeah?

I've heard/seen all the horror stories.

I've heard/seen all the horror stories.

Seen it personally at my daughter's school more than twice, and had to talk to the supervisor to get her to stop the teacher who was doing it. I wouldn't hit a woman, but if this was a male teacher he would have gone down for the count, and there wouldn't be one thing they could do.

When riding a motorbike or a car in Thailand, one always has to be on the lookout, have eyes on the front side, and back of your head, always looking for pedestrians, bicycles, motorbikes, dogs, cows, cars and trucks, otherwise it's just a hazard waiting to happen.

If this guy had been sharp enough he would have seen her, she didn't just appear out of nowhere, so he was either going too fast, driving recklessly, drunk or just not paying attention. All of which are crimes if you're on the road.

And so many here just are unable to recognize this fact maybe because they’re guilty of the same driving habits.

Best to think ahead....before

It's too late to say you're sorry.

Don't ride in Thailand until you've been here 10 years.

What was he thinking?

Get out of my country!

Also, why was this guy riding around on the roads during the 10-Days of Danger?

If I were ever to be run down by a vehicle, I would not wish it to be an American.

I would prefer a Thai person.

But, maybe I could get more money out of the American?

Anyway, I do not drive in Thailand because....

I worry about just this kind of accident.

I do not want to be responsible for injury or death to another.

Maybe some don't care?

I would rather pay money to be driven, rather than take the risk.

Each to his own, I guess.
