Police fatally shoot patient wielding axe at Surin Hospital

A tragic incident unfolded at Surin Hospital where a 27 year old patient, recovering from surgery, was shot and killed by police after brandishing a weapon. Local police reported the unfortunate event took place within a patient ward on the hospital’s fourth floor.

 

The patient, identified only as Apichai, had recently undergone an appendectomy. During his recovery, he inexplicably armed himself with a firefighter’s axe and began chasing medical staff and other patients, causing panic and chaos.

 

Police were summoned to the scene, and two patrol officers arrived to manage the situation. Despite commands to disarm, Apichai advanced towards the officers with the axe, leading to the officers opening fire. Unfortunately, the young man later died from his injuries.

Police chief Weerapan na Lampang of the Mueang Surin station has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. He assured that the inquiry would be conducted with impartiality and fairness to all involved, reported Bangkok Post.

Additionally, a formal complaint has been registered, prompting a criminal investigation into the actions of the patrol officers on site.

Give these officers tasers. They could have easily dropped him with a couple zaps.  He was probably half out of his mind from the drugs given to him for his surgery and became aggressive and disoriented. I guess we’ll never know now.

Building 9 is a general ward and they have patients of all ages and a security guard on the door. When I took my six-week old there we ended up in building 9 for the first three days. When this shooting incident happened, I was in actually in building 6, about a 20 second stroll away.

I have employed a Taser several times.  Difficult hitting a moving target(like someone wieldiing an axe).  Darts are fired attached to a wire so the exit velocity is not as fast as a round exiting the working end of a barrel. Also, the darts have to make direct agaisnt the skin in order for the electrick shock to take effect.  I do not have much faith in Thai Police to properly train, maintain and eventually use a actual Taser in real life circumstances.  Like most tools in law enforcement "it is easier said then done".

Tasers don't always work.  If someone came at me with an axe I would blast them also.  Good job by the cops.
