I need a US will to cover my American assets. I approached law firms in Bangkok that claimed to have US expertise. However, only one gave me a quote which, at 96,300 baht (almost US$ 3,000) I think is outrageous.

I then emailed three attorneys in the US who claimed to have expertise in wills and probate. That was a month ago. Not one replied. No idea why.

Has anyone managed to set up a US will from Bangkok? And if so, how did you do it?

Thanks

p.s. I have looked into various will templates on the Internet. They aren’t a good fit with what I want to do.

I don't know what "legal templates" you've looked at.  Have you looked into "Legal Zoom"?  I'm not sure what their requirements are or how much they charge, but they claim you can create documents that will work in every state.  And that's entirely plausible.

Each state has its own probate law.  Are you a legal resident of any US state or territory?  Do you have property on the US, in that state or in any other state?

Anyway, sometimes a will has to be witnessed.  Sometimes not.

A  will doesn't have to be complicated.

Start by looking at Legal Zoom.

Take a trip back to US and handle it there.

If you substantial holdings don't rely on a Thailand based attorney

I had a US will and power of attorney drawn up by a lawyer in the US a couple of years ago.

Both documents required notarization with witnesses. I had that done at the US Embassy here in Bangkok.

$3,000 or so for a will using a lawyer sounds about right, but could be more if the estate is large and more complex.

I think there are some issues that need to be addressed if one is not a legal resident of any state. Might be best to get proper advice instead of using templates.
