Grab and Food Panda Blocking (some or all?) Thai bank debit cards

I've QR/scanned direct to the driver's own bank instead of cash and I'd be surprised if most of them don't accept that method.  I also have BBL, KTB, UOB KBank and Krungsri cards on my Grab payment method list all of which operate normally.

Yeah I'm pretty sure most all of them do indeed accept paying by scans.

Dense of me not to think of that before but I was fooled by it not being in the payment option list.

But I need a stored payment option and that will be True Money Wallet.

Not allowed on foodpanda. Unless it is in a Thai national's name.

Using it for 7-11 deliveries, either paying first or they scan it after arriving is no problem, them scanning it in the 7-11 is no problem. Foodpanda says For Thai nationals only, select a different payment method.

My True Money Wallet works without stored payment (its just linked to a Thai Credit Card).

It works in 7-11 etc - though I've never tried it with FoodPanda

So, I'm not sure if this is a 'Thai National thing' rather it might be related to having a Thai Credit card perhaps ?

I'm surprised people are still using Food Panda - We had many issues with very slow delivery (in Bangkok) and stopped using them years ago.

GRAB Delivery has all the same restaurants and many more - though browsing on the phone is a PITA if you prefer to browse on the bigger computer screen.

Aslo - GRAB standards are slipping, and deliveries are getting slower as they economise (profit) and double up on delivery, so your order could be slower as its delivered on a 'route' rather than a dedicated delivery, unless you opt to pay more for Premium Delivery.

It's kind of a requirement now in Thailand that the local debit card and credit card processing must be processed locally, like being routed through TPN (Thai Payment network) , and because of that, they are not stable and have regular downtime and incidents causing debit cards to fail, specifically Mastercard from BBL. Debit cards are special because they can be routed quickly to the acquiring local banks, and that means using local systems developed here by the the banks, they go down quite often.

Maybe another reason could be high amount of fraud on the local debit cards so they stopped accepting Debit for most transactions.

Do you have to do 3DS/OTP for the debit cards when used with Food Panda?

I think credit card is much better, you get a pretty good protection there.

This is in line with what Bangkok Bank told me. It doesn't explain why some are also having trouble with Visa debit cards though. I was able to successfully add and use my daughter's Krung Sri Visa debit with Grab yesterday though.

Not all the same restaurants.

Very slow service tends to happen more with peak times, holidays, etc.

It used to be foreigners couldn't get a True Money account at all. Now we can.

Thats always been a weird one for me...    I've had a TrueMoney Wallet account and never encountered an issue and don't know why.

I don't have Line Rabbit Pay thingy and can't get it (though I'd never use it anyway) - but years ago, when I tried it blocked me (no non-Thai's).

The idiosyncrasies and 'steps' involved with these some of these 'accounts' are a complete enigma.

The same can be said of actual banking.

- With SCB - I could not get the NDID (face ID) system approved as I am not Thai - so if I wanted to transfer over 50,000 baht in any one transaction I had to sign a waver absolving SCB of any responsibility should there be a fraudulent transaction on my account.

- With Bangkok Bank - I set up the NDID system easily and can transfer more than 50,000 baht with ease using the NDID system.

I'm completely unsure why one Bank wont allow this, and another will.

I have a U.S. credit card but no Thai one.

I wouldn't use my U.S. credit card on these apps.

Do they accept foreign cards? Just asking as I wouldn't use it if they did.

US cards, ahh that is a complex matter 😄

Many companies here actually like to block US cards, because 1), they usually lack 3DS/ACS enrollment, that means, no OTP, and 2) they are often rejected because since there is no 3DS involved, processors and merchants here dont want the liability passed to them, they prefer 3DS transactions because they are not liable for fraud, and 3) US cards get a much higher rates here than local cards (imposed by local acquirers for a good reason). so for example, 1.25% fee on international cards, but as low as 0.4% for local cards. if they are not making much profit, by allowing US cards are likely to be at a loss.

you can use your US card here as long as the app uses a decent payment gateway, that has PCI-DSS. the most popular in Thailand is 2C2P, and then Omise/OPN next to be the most secure, anything else dont trust.

I work in this field, just can't share more than that I already did.

Well yippee!

Sort of.

I was able to open a True Money account and did an initial topup from ironically Bangok Bank.

As reported here Panda won't accept from foreigners.

But I did succeed in adding it as my payment method on Grab.

Yet to use it but seems good.

As far as Panda well I use Grab much more often but I will not be able to stay in their Frequent Gobbler Club discount program as that requires a payment option on record.

I'll cope somehow.
