The Kremlin is keeping a watchful eye on recent remarks by US President-elect Donald Trump regarding the possibility of taking Greenland from Denmark, a statement that has sparked international unease. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized Russia's vested interest in the Arctic, describing the region as being within its "sphere of national and strategic interests" and highlighting Moscow's commitment to maintaining peace and stability there.

Trump’s comments, which included an unwillingness to rule out military action, have drawn sharp criticism from European leaders. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas underscored the importance of respecting Greenland’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, while German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated unequivocally that "borders must not be moved by force."

Peskov characterized Trump’s remarks as dramatic but maintained they were primarily a matter for the United States, Denmark, and other directly involved nations. However, he noted, “We are present in the Arctic zone, and we will continue to be present there,” signaling Russia’s ongoing interest in the region’s strategic and economic importance.

Outgoing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sought to calm international anxiety during a visit to Paris, dismissing the feasibility of Trump’s idea. “The idea is... obviously not a good one, but maybe more important, it’s obviously one that’s not going to happen,” Blinken said. Similarly, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy downplayed the likelihood of Trump following through but acknowledged the destabilizing potential of his rhetoric.

Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty, is home to a population of around 56,000 and hosts both US and Danish military installations. The island’s vast reserves of untapped mineral and oil wealth make it geopolitically significant.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede, who has been advocating for independence from Denmark, reiterated that the territory is "not for sale." Both he and Denmark’s leadership have stressed that Greenland’s future will be decided by its own people, further rejecting any notion of external interference.

As Trump’s comments ripple across the international community, Russia’s stated vigilance underscores the Arctic’s growing strategic significance. With competing interests in the resource-rich region, global powers are paying close attention to developments, ensuring that any rhetoric threatening stability is met with a unified stance.

Trump's BS.

Might be useful sometimes (for Ukraine).

If the president of the USA suggests any possible military move that impacts world's power balance, it is enough to worry Poo-tin(already full of paranoids).

As he might feel he could soon face Another Front while own inept forces well overstretched invading the neighbor.

Trump sends out extreme messages to make his point, like Climate Change alarmists over the years, and people been taking them seriously. Heck, we know what caused those LA fires don't we.

Difference is Trump has more control over his extreme utterances and is in a position to exceed expectations - he won't invade Greenland, Canada or Panama, democracy will prevail in the US, woke trends including contempt for Western civilisation will wither, US economy will be stronger and swinging voters will ultimately be glad they rejected Haha Harris.

Talk about over estimating an absolute huckster and goon. Severe disappointment is coming your way!

No need to monitor anything, this is just a very silly man with the emotional development of a 13-year-old, and absolutely no ability to discern the importance of what he says and does. He will say absolutely anything, he just blurts stuff out like a juvenile and people actually take him seriously.

This is not a man that should be taken seriously on any level.

You sure seem to be taking him seriously

LOL.

The US is once again the laughing stock of the world. They can all feel better about themselves, knowing that he will be a magnet for abject failure and lunacy, just like last time, only worse.

I love when people try to parse his comments, claiming he's some sort of 3 dimensional chess player, and that he really means....blah blah blah. The fact is he's a clown, a willfully ignorant lazy bloated bozo, who has been a failure in life, save for his daddy's money and his Game Show, which made losers think he's some sort of great businessman.

That's the guy who wanted to nuke hurricanes and inject people with disinfectant to cure Covid. He wasn't joking, as the devastation of Maria in Puerto Rico, and the millions of deaths that would result from Covid were not laughing matters.

As for Europe and defense, I guess that should become like the US mil-ind complex and engage in massive cost overruns and fraud. THAT is how the US got such a massive defense budget. Seriously, if Germany builds another 10,000 tanks, that helps how? Most weapons nations build or buy sit unused, until they get mothballed and the next generation of massive cost overruns takes hold.

As for Putin, I guess if Greenland is okay for the US< "Seward's Folly" must be okay for Russia. The US has never controlled Greenland, while Denmark has had it since 1380 AD. Oh, and maybe the Apache and Comanche and Seminoles and Navajos, etc. can use force to take back lands white Europeans took from them.

Oh, and Syria and Lebanon? Anyone in those nations who is a jihadi type couldn't care less about 47. He couldn't dictate a Drag Queen Story Hour to them, much less any sort of policy or behavior.

It's 2024. What's done is done, and the days of Colonialism, Imperialism, the 'white man's burden', etc., are over.

47 is the polar opposite of Teddy Roosevelt ("Speak softly, but carry a big stick"). He's all hot air and silly hyperbole.

Obama was more Teddy. He spoke softly with Iran, but carried a big stick, or Stuxnet. That put genuine fear in the mullahs (when their high speed centrifuges wobbled and exploded due to power fluctuations caused by the Stuxnet virus). That fear drove them to the negotiating table, resulting in the JCPOA and a total moratorium on nuke development, U235 enrichment, etc.

47 loves to claim credit for "crushing ISIS", but he did nothing, save for allow the policy put in motion by Obama to continue. 47 then subsequently abandoned the Kurds (not the first POTUS to do that), which resulted in lots of US allies getting wiped out.

So unafraid are the mullahs of 47 that after he ordered the assassination of Gen Soleimani, Iran attacked US bases in Irbil. They subsequently restarted their U235 enrichment program (after 47 abrogated the JCPOA), upped their hacking of US databases as well as learning how to hack US drones (and passing that knowledge to China), and upped their support for Hezbollah and other Shi'a terror groups.

White Man's burden eh and Donald the lousy businessman (read he was bankrupt) . Will grant you, his Covid comments were bizarre.

Days of White man colonialism, you racist or something? What's wrong with colonialism before Whitey got big ships? Ignore the Silk Road over eons. And what was Africa then my friend, Paradise on Earth, no wars, no slavery? Hear the women had it good. Sounds like that chip on your shoulder, weighing you down.

You drink the Dem Kool-Aid about dangerous Trump, after his first term was clearly more palatable for voters than Biden. And funny how Trump triumphed this time with swings from Black (am I allowed to say that now) and Hispanics or were they conned, or just plain dumb. Got any idea why the Dems and in turmoil or you have the insight of a rock.

I was no fan of Trump the first time, and had reservations this time, but Haha Harris with all the celebrities lining up, her many policy switches and otherwise lack of coherency, shone through as the campaign went on. Crystallized things that have broken in the US.

Trump's  not even in office and being taken seriously today by Putin and Zelensky. I used to think he was dumb, but have heard him speak on a range of topics sans teleprompter, hold 2 hours conversations, where Biden and Harris would struggle with 5 minutes.

Left wing politicians have degenerated to symbolism like DEI, BLM, #MeToo, Net Zero, Free Palestine while we need more nuanced analysis and practical solutions. The righteous, deceptive MSM are losing relevance as they overstretched on so many issues.

I hope Trump doesn't disappoint, along with Meloni, Milei and Poilievre, as we could well be on the path to a more sensible decade.
