Yes....I can smell burning plastic quite often.....we also have a "garage' in the village than burns off old engine oil and tyres about once a month......

Are you unable to communicate with your Village Headman? Just as him or her to switch from burning these petrochemical products, such as used engine oil...to.... Use of microbes, instead. This is certainly what I would do. Get some good bacteria working for you. 1 1
Popular Post short-Timer Posted Friday at 05:39 PM Popular Post Posted Friday at 05:39 PM People often talk about the paradise of living in a rural Thai village amongst nature, a quiet easy life, blah, blah, blah. But in reality they burn all their garbage all year round, including anything toxic, like plastic, petrochemicals, and anything else that grows out of the ground. Oh, the bliss! 1 1 1 1 2

This shows how little you know about rural thailand. Plastic is segregated and sold, along with cardboard and glass. Hardly anything is wasted coz it's worth money to the locals. What's burnt is what cannot be sold. 2 1 1
PomPolo Posted yesterday at 02:06 AM Posted yesterday at 02:06 AM I don't think our village got the memo the misses was outside burning the rubbish this morning my Thai is bad when I wake up so just let her get on with it 🙂 1 1

Plastic bags, plastic containers, plastic packaging etc. Yes, here there are folk going through the bins collecting plastic bottles, cans, cardboard etc, but there is still a lot of plastic that cannot be recycled. The worst one is the styrofoam. These unsellables are what they burn and the smoke is toxic. 1 1
Popular Post spidermike007 Posted yesterday at 03:43 AM Popular Post Posted yesterday at 03:43 AM I don't know if the central government is sincere, but the provincial authorities don't seem to care one iota, and even if they care they don't seem to be capable of policing the areas, and even if they were capable of placing the areas they don't seem to have the conviction to impose large enough fines to stop these farmers. In essence these farmers are practicing a form of terrorism against their own people, they are killing people, they are putting people in the hospital, they are shortening lives, and they are making life miserable for a significant portion of the nation, simply because it's easier and less expensive to burn. The degree to which the smoke is toxic is unfathomable. it is the absolute epitome of self-absorption and zero concern for others. These farmers need to be punished in a very expensive and convincing manner. 1 3 2

The problem is one of timescales......if people were dying in a week of burning then something would be done, but as it takes years for the lung/brain damage to reveal itself they fool themselves that it isn't real. In a similar vein I'm convinced most Thais think the polluted air is "in the distance".....they have no concept of actually living in it as they can't see it up close.

There is likely some truth to that and then in addition they like to blame neighboring countries, and although I'm sure there is burning and fires going on in neighboring countries most of what we are experiencing is fairly localized within the region. Then there are the diesel vehicles, the trucks and pickups which are not being well maintained, and those of us that know anything about diesel know that it's one of the worst polluters if it's not properly maintained. What percentage of diesel vehicle owners in Thailand, especially truck owners properly maintain their vehicles? Why don't the authorities do anything about it? They shut down the nation for covid, yet they do nothing about plumes of black smoke, crop burning, highway traffic safety issues, and so many other things of importance. 4

There is just no excuse for these cars/lorries/buses to be pumping out fumes.....even more annoying are the airheads that chip their trucks to get an ounce of extra power at the cost of huge plumes of smoke.....absolutely criminal 1
spidermike007 Posted yesterday at 04:58 AM Posted yesterday at 04:58 AM A while back they had a campaign and they had posters with phone numbers that you could call to report vehicles that were polluting. We were driving and we saw this truck that was pumping out huge black clouds of smoke and I copied down their license plate and I dialed the number, and handed my phone to my Thai woman and asked her speak to the department. She asked the person who answered the phone what can they do? He ask her why are you calling us and she said, well you have phone numbers posted to report polluting vehicles? The guy said well I don't know anything about that, nor who I would report it to, and she said well that's not really our issue is it? You're supposed to be monitoring polluting vehicles. He said OK, give me the license plate number and I'll see what I can do. My wife said are you going to do anything? He said, I don't know I need to look at the regulations first and see who I'm supposed to report it to, and then maybe somebody will do something. The smoke will die down when the dinosaurs are replaced with young and progressive leaders, who care about the health, welfare and well being of the nation, and the environment. The current crop do not have any initiative, nor any ideas. Dinosaurs are cursed with small brains. 1 2

They literally just don't care one iota and the only reason why the hapless PM is even talking about this it's because so many people are complaining about the air. It is so horrendous. If the Chinese were able to clean up their air certainly Thailand could it, if they wanted to, if it meant enough, if it was a priority, if they had compassion, decency, pride, and empathy for the people, and cared about the environment one iota. They don't. Sloths don't have pride. 1

The whole world burns rubbish. London sets fire to over half its waste. 2 million tonnes of waste were sent to incinerators or Energy from Waste facilities last year - more than doubling in the last decade. Incineration at an Energy from Waste facility is the main alternative to landfill 1 1

The world produces over two billion tonnes of municipal solid waste every year, enough to fill over 800,000 Olympic sized swimming pools. Per head of population the worst offenders are the US, as Americans produce three times the global average of waste, including plastic and food. When it comes to recycling, America again lags behind other countries, only re-using 35% of solid waste. 1 1

Purdey Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Called She Who Must Be Obeyed, who is in Suphan for a few days. Me: is there a lot of burning there? She: Yes lots. Me: Do they know how bad it is for the environment? She: Of course. Me: So why don't they stop? She: They don't care. They've been doing this for generations. Me: Why didn't anyone report them to the (large SET-listed) sugar mill there? She: They don't care. They want money. They are telling the farmers to burn the fields....

They will burn.....they have no option unless the processors are forced to take sugarcane with the leaves on. Once the leaves are cut of in the field the farmers can't see where to plough......they will burn every time.

And didn't you post some time ago that she's a farmer, so most likely contributing to the burning. Stop crying about your own wrong decisions, because unless you were born where you live now, nobody can force you to live anywhere. You almost sound like a lefty.
