Root canal treatment

I've been going to the same dentist in Pattaya Tai for over 20 years, and recently, I went in to have a lost cap refitted. She noticed some decay in the tooth and suggested a root canal treatment. After taking X-rays, she mentioned that she couldn’t see the roots clearly and recommended that I see a root canal specialist.

I then tried two different clinics in Pattaya that claim to specialize in this, but both rely on specialists coming down from Bangkok. Long story short, I couldn’t manage to schedule a consultation.

Right now, I have a temporary cap on the tooth and no pain at all. I have X-rays of the tooth, both with and without the cap, and they show a little decay. Obviously, I’m not a dentist, but to my untrained eye, the cavity doesn’t seem anywhere near the pulp. That said, I’m willing to go with the doctor’s opinion and get the root canal done, followed by a new cap. The only issue is that I might run out of time since I’m leaving in two weeks.

I’m open to going to Bangkok for the procedure—does anyone have recommendations for a good, reliable clinic?

Not as a recommendation but a point of information...  I had 2 root canals done on an emergency basis (a couple of months apart) at Bumrungrad and they each cost about $1000 USD all in.  But they were emergencies with a lot of pain, so I gladly paid because they got me in same-day. 

 

That didn't include any permanent crowns because I wasn't in Bangkok long enough for the 2-3 sittings.

 

You can obviously find cheaper root canals.  This is just a heads up for anyone in a dire rush...

Yeah like you already suggest, for that price I might as well have it done in Europe ;)

Leaving in 2 weeks, probably not enough time to do a root canal much less get the subsequent crown.

 

I've had a number of root canals over the years,  all involved 3 - 5 sessions each at least a week apart, followed by insertion of post and fitting for a crown.  Over a month for the whole thing.

Hi Sheryl, I'm really surprised to hear that. I have had at least two root canals done years ago, and IIRC it was just 3 visits over about a week total. One to kill the root,  one to clean up  and build up for a crown and then the crown itself.  This was also more or less what the dentist I saw already suggested when trying to plan it.   

If this is indeed the case I guess my only option now is just to have a new permanent crown fitted and take my chances. I'm honestly not really sure why they are so keen on doing the root canal when there are no problems at this time. The cavity has been cleaned up and cause no pain, so should be possible to build on for a permanent crown.  If one day it turns out to cause pain or problems I can always proceed with the root canal then.

Ask for a consultation with Dr Thamrong Limpanapa who will confirm (or otherwise) whether you need root canal treatment and if so, pass you to the specialist at his clinic. He works Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and sometimes Monday. Their website is https://www.dentaldesignclinic-lab.com/. I’ve been a patient for more than 20 years and couldn’t ask for a better dentist.

I had root  canal treatment by specalist.  temp crown new crown fitted. Three visits over 16 days in Chaing mai in January.  cost 15,000 baht.

I’ve passed on a few recommended root canals, the last one ~five years ago in cm, the tooth is still good. Personally I believe most root canals are unnecessary unless decay has reached the root. Root canals are big money makers for dentists.

I have had similar root canal treatment and X rays done at Asavanant Clinic Thong Lo, Bangkok. Excellent service, easy to understand treatment plan over several months given.

I had one done years ago, by German Dental forgot the Soi maybe mentioned already going up Thappaya Rd from 3rd road  left side before the light.

They did the crown years ago to save expense they drill through crown kill all the roots and fill hole back.

I was schedule within 24 hours I think two season they have their own lab onsite can do crown 48 hours.

Let me backtrack a bit, I was leaving for the US in a few days I was in lots of pain lots same day I walked in they inserted something like a time release pain killer into the area told good for a year it was a miracle as if nothing was wrong, came back two weeks after my trip had it done it might have been one day but I'm sure it took two appointments. This same crown they put in years earlier took 24 hours to make.

Most of my teeth have root canals. I never had the procedure done over more than one day, and that included having posts inserted. It was a long procedure and I often went to sleep, so I had a block used to keep my mouth open. I didn't ever have a crown fitted at the same time. Some were crowned years later.

Obviously, having a crown fitted involved 2 visits as they had to make the crown.

 

Many of them were done at Grace clinic in Chiang Mai, a few in London, and some at a clinic in Pattaya that has closed

 

Seems to me that multiple visits is just to get a bigger payout.

Next to check my university dental school there’s a dental practice there and I saw the dentist and I think it took him about 45 minutes and then he prepared the tooth with it like a temporary crown I wanna say like maybe a week or two later I went to another dentist in town And he put the post and checked everything in a week later or 10 days that I came back and he had the permanent crown that I have I think the total cost of everything including the new crown was around 16,000 that’s not good veneer on it or it looks like a regular tooth I had another root canal done in America over 40 years ago and they put a Not a crown on top I’m gonna say like a permanent seal or whatever and hasn’t given me any problem and this dentist said it’s been that long don’t worry about getting a crown for that one go figure TIT

I'd recommmend finding an accredited Endodontist (they specialise in root canals).  I have had several root canal treatments done, and once in Hanoi I didnt check, the Dentist was just a regular Dentist at a well known clinic and in the end she really didnt know what she was doing - it took 12 visits and 18 months later I had to get a second root canal re-done it the same tooth.
