A shocking act of violence unfolded in Bangkok’s Yan Nawa district on the evening of 8 February, when a man doused another with petrol and set him alight before fleeing the scene. Authorities believe the attack stemmed from jealousy after the victim reportedly began a relationship with the suspect’s former partner.

At around 20:30 Pol Lt Manit Trutdee of Bang Phong Phang Police Station received a report of a vehicle fire inside Wat Dokmai on Soi Sathupradit 58/8. Emergency responders, including volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers found a white Suzuki Carry parked near the temple’s ordination hall. The vehicle, used to transport watermelons, bore signs of fire damage on its left side. Witnesses had managed to extinguish the flames using dry chemical extinguishers before firefighters arrived.

A 52-year-old man, later identified as Rachen Thepmanee, was discovered with severe burns covering approximately 80% of his body. He was immediately provided with first aid before being rushed to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital for emergency treatment.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker, known only as “Ploen,” is a former temple driver, aged around 50. He and the victim, a temple caretaker, were said to have a history of personal disputes, allegedly linked to a romantic relationship with the same female.

According to accounts, the suspect had broken up with his girlfriend about a month ago and later learned that she had started seeing the victim. The revelation reportedly sparked jealousy, culminating in the attack.

“The victim was at the temple selling watermelons as usual. His vehicle was parked in its regular spot when the suspect walked up carrying a petrol-filled bag. Without warning, he threw it at the victim and set him on fire before fleeing,” a witness stated.

Further reports indicate that just a week before the attack, the suspect allegedly threatened the victim’s son with a firearm at their home within the temple community. Residents, fearing for their safety, had chosen to avoid confrontation due to the suspect’s possession of a weapon.

Authorities are now gathering evidence and reviewing CCTV footage from the temple and surrounding areas. Witnesses have been called in for further questioning as police work to track down the suspect and bring him to justice.

Seems like the keyword here is: former

Would be nice if people here could understand they not own their partners, girlfriends or wifes.

A Bangkok watermelon vendor who was doused in petrol and set on fire in a shocking attack at a temple in the Rama III area has died from his injuries. Mr Rachen, 52, suffered severe burns covering more than 80% of his body and was rushed to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital in critical condition. Authorities confirmed his death on 10 February.

Police investigations identified the suspect as Mr Ploen, approximately 50 years old, a former driver for the temple's abbot.

The victim, who also worked as a caretaker at the temple, reportedly had a long-standing feud with the suspect over a romantic rivalry. Around a month ago, Mr Ploen ended a relationship with his girlfriend, only to later discover that she had become involved with Mr Rachen, sparking jealousy and resentment.

On the day of the attack, Mr Rachen was selling watermelons at the temple as usual. Witnesses say Mr Ploen approached him carrying a plastic bag filled with petrol, which he threw over the victim before immediately setting him alight. The suspect then fled the scene.

Mr Rachen's son revealed that his father had been living with a new partner, Ms Kai, aged 45, for around three months. She had repeatedly received threatening phone calls from Mr Ploen, leading her to file a police complaint at Lumpini Police Station. The victim's family strongly believes the attack was motivated by the ongoing love triangle dispute.

Meanwhile, officers from Lumpini Police Station are actively hunting for Mr Ploen, who remains at large. Authorities have urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward as they seek to bring him to justice.

Tip to the police: He´s only 50 years old. I would suggest his mother is alive, and he ran home to mummy! That´s what spineless morons like him do over here.

Tip to Mr. Ploen: You ended the relationship with a girlfriend. Mean you were not even married. Just another fake man, that think he owns women´s life and can restrict their freedom.
