Benefits to closing a bank account?

Featured Replies

I opened a bank account in a place where I don't live anymore.

Is there a benefit in closing that bank account and open a new one in the place where I live at the moment, other than saving 20 Baht on occasional withdrawals?

Also because it's quite easy to close a bank account online nowadays and one doesn't have to visit the bank to close it, so no real need to close it? Or is there?

Don't bother closing it, just open a new bank account near to where you live (and presumably where you deal with Immigration).

Bangkok Bank will not allow me to have two accounts.  Tried to open one at a different branch.  No go!

Go to a different branch and don’t mention your other account and just say you wanna open a new account I’m in one branch at Bangkok Bank said OK we’re gonna take your account and come back in a week to get your new book cause we have to send it away or some other BS so then when that book got full I was at a different branch where I knew somebody who worked there and I said so how long do you think I’ll have to be without my Paper bank account book and he said what do you mean I can do everything and you’ll have it back in a new book within less than five minutes and he did so sometimes I would try different branches TIT

You can do pretty much everything with the banks app, including cardless withdraws and it's free of charge. If you want them account closed you can simply empty it and after a while then bank will close it (might take dinner time though but I can't see any problems with leaving it opened)

My only concern would be the account getting hijacked.

Very unlikely, but not impossible.

Closing it relieves you of the possibility of being dragged into something unpleasant.

If that does not concern you, there is no real reason to close it.

Also there are certain conditions under which the bank will close it for you. (min balance, etc.)

Sure there are benefits to close your bank account especially if you have it in Hua Hin in a specific bank that I cannot mention of course.

In this Hua Hin branch of a major bank I will not of course mention...it does have quite a few unhelpful to rude staff. Mainly the guy at the cash counter who seems to have a chip on the shoulder when dealing with a foreigner.

They make it a point to be rude in this branch, and say the usual "no can do". Especially when you draw say a huge amount from one of their many ATM's lined outside in the 2nd floor of Market Village and then ask for smaller bills .The chap always rudely sends you away with the usual mantra "No-have"... But few steps away, another bank, they are all lovely, welcomming,  similing and very willingly make change for you and remind you how wonderful people can be in lovely Thailand. (despite a few grouches around like anywhere else in the world).
