Mother Dies in Car Crash After Temple Visit with Family

A family trip to a temple across Bangkok ended in when the car crashed into a streetlight, leaving a 78-year-old mother dead and her son, the driver, seriously injured.

 

The crash occurred on 9 February, along the Suvarnabhumi Canal Road in Bang Chalong, Bang Phli District. At around 22:00, Lieutenant Jirasupang Thammasorn of Bang Phli Police Station received a report of a collision involving a grey Honda Civic that had crashed into a roadside streetlight. Emergency responders from Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital and the Ruamkatanyu Foundation rushed to the scene.

 

Upon arrival, rescue workers found three injured passengers outside the vehicle, two men and one woman, suffering from facial injuries and chest pain. They were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The car’s front end was damaged, and the impact had caused the streetlight to collapse.

 

Inside the vehicle, the lifeless body of 78-year-old Khotchakorn was discovered in the rear left seat. Her head and neck were wedged between the front seat and the door. Investigations revealed that the car had been carrying four family members: the deceased mother and her three children.

 

According to her 51-year-old son, Chukit, who was driving, the family had spent the day visiting several temples in Bangkok before stopping for dinner. As they were returning home to Kheha Muang Mai Bang Phli, exhaustion took its toll, and he briefly dozed off behind the wheel. The car then veered off course and slammed into the streetlight, causing the fatal injury.

 

His sister, who had been sitting in the front passenger seat, recounted how the entire family had fallen asleep during the drive, never expecting such a tragedy. She noted that her brother was not known for reckless driving and was experienced in transporting their family safely.

 

“It was completely unforeseen,” she said. “Our mother wasn’t wearing a seatbelt in the back. If she had been, she might have survived.”

 

Police officers documented the scene and collected evidence before handing the deceased’s body over to the forensic unit at Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital for an autopsy. The three surviving family members will be summoned for further questioning as authorities continue their investigation into the incident.

Always wear a seat belt, even if you're sitting in the back seat......
