Thailand’s national police chief, Police General Kitrat Panphet, has directed police forces across the nation to heighten surveillance of foreign nationals amid escalating concerns over public order and safety. This new measure, announced on 17 February, stems from reports of foreign visitors’ conduct that disrupts social harmony, violates public morals, and potentially damages Thailand's reputation.

 

The directive requires all policing units, including the Metropolitan Police, Provincial Police, Immigration, Tourist Police, and Border Patrol, to prioritise the matter.

 

The move follows troubling incidents, notably in Pai, Mae Hong Son, where local businesses recently refused service to Israeli nationals. This decision arose after reports of inappropriate behaviour by some Israeli tourists, who allegedly verbally abused medical staff and threatened property damage at a local hospital.

 

 

 

Adding to the concern, a Facebook video depicting intoxicated foreigners harassing female restaurant owners went viral, fanning online safety fears.

 

General Kitrat has instructed law enforcement in Mae Hong Son to investigate these incidents thoroughly and report back within a week. The police are earnest in ensuring Thailand remains safe and hospitable for all its visitors, reported The Thaiger.

About time the RTP  'Monitored' itself.    They could try 'cracking down' on useless Thai Drivers for a start and i could name another 50 area's where they could attempt to do their jobs properly and in a Professional manner  !

I think social media has really dumbed down recent generations. All the "influencers" and dumbasses making pointless videos and feeding off of each other to get more "wild" (obnoxious). Especially in developed countries.

Realistically it's impossible to stop low quality tourists from coming in as long as there is a visa waiver. The IO doesn't know what kind of person is in front of them. It's easy to change visa rules.

Start with a mandatory health insurance.

Implement a airport tax.

Restrict the "visa free" stay to 3 weeks only.

Renting a motorbike with Thai or International permit only.

Require to show cash money (20.000 Baht)

The best time I’ve experienced in recent years in Thailand was the depths of the Covid-19 pandemic, when staying in or entering Thailand required some dedication and motivation to be here beyond getting drunk and acting like an a$$hole. Now it’s just free for all, they let anybody in.

 

I realize it was economically tough for a lot of locals who depend on the tourism industry but there’s got to be a happy medium. The first year I came here there were 3 million tourists and I’ve personally witnessed over almost 4 decades how over tourism has degraded so many things in this country as they driven the numbers up to 40 million.

It's all above. Make visa rules for foreigners to Thailand, tourists or expats to apply in their home countries, similar as for a visa to Schengen or USA and it would change overnight, however will never happen to much 🤑greed.

     I doubt tourist behavior has changed much over the years.  People vacation to let loose and have fun, a change from their regular lives of quiet desperation.  What has changed is social media, blowing up isolated incidents that in the past would either not have been reported, or, if reported locally, would not have received wide-spread publicity.   In any case, just a show of seemingly doing something.

General stricter visa requirements and of course crossing the border when already in Thailand must be ruled out as a form of visa extension.

The bottom two are already required, but never enforced. And that's the bottom line: it doesn't matter how many rules or laws they make - if they don't enforce them they don't matter.
