Tak Bai was just a tiny fraction of the number of deaths that happened on Thaksin’s watch.

“In February 2003, the Thai government, under then Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, launched a 'war on drugs', purportedly aimed at the suppression of drug trafficking and the prevention of drug use. In fact, a major outcome of this policy was arbitrary killings. In the first three months of the campaign there were some 2800 extrajudicial killings. In 2007, an official investigation found that more than half of those killed had no connection whatsoever to drugs. Apart from the thousands who lost their lives, thousands more were forced into coercive "treatment" for drug addiction.”

How about an apology for all those deaths?

Will not happen  quote  "I've done nothing wrong!"  "I just give the policy."

I don't know why he has suddenly decided to apologise, but at least he has done so.

I have always been curious as to who gave the go ahead to use extreme force, the Minister of Defense, General Chettha Thanajaro, General Prawit Wongsuwan Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, a local commander or civilian PM Thaksin Shinawatra. While Thaksin takes ultimate responsibility, a senior military figure must have informed forces on the ground to be ruthless. If you remember the famous red drum incidents in late 1972, it was the military.

It is surprising how low and unfeeling he is.  Does he really think that just saying I am sorry is going to solve the problem.

I am sorry, but the sooner they remove PM Thaksin from this country, the better.  He must go back to jail or be legally barred from any financial involvement with the political scene.  He is the problem with the system along with the Elites.

He was kicked out of the UK.

why they keep referring to him as FORMER PM, they should get their facts straight,  he's the current acting PM

Of course many of us know that, but we aren't brainwashed locals who couldn't give a ratsar$e as it doesn't make any difference to them

He is designated as a 'Persona non grata'

Someone who is unwanted or unwelcome.

He had to relinquish  his ownership of the Manchester City football club, which he had bought because of financial ambiguities.

Under the carpet, out of sight

...there are lots of suppressed minority groups who have been directly affected by his orders to both the Army and Police, a very heavy-handed approach.

Whilst he is in the 'apology frame of mind', I hope he then heads back up North to the Golden Triangle area where his drug trafficking campaign saw over 2,275 extrajudicial killings, with a a number of innocent bystanders and family members being killed in the cross-fire.

The Government of the day in response to the huge public outcry, was to invite those aggrieved parties to lodge a claim for compensation.

A lot of people haven't a clue about the extrajudicial killing of drug traffickers, or the massive fraud that led to him fleeing the country.

In a significant gesture, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has publicly apologised for the Tak Bai incident, expressing regret for the tragic events during his tenure.

That apology would have been a significant gesture alright - some 20 years ago!
