Claude-3.7: Is rate of AI-progress speeding up? Here is why we should worry/not-worry...

Dear Folks,

I am not worried about AI.

What...

Me worry?

But I am old, and some of you are young, or know people who are young.

Also, has AI now just about totaled the Internet with machine-produced content?

And, exactly how much of the Internet we can access on search engines, like Google, is produced not by humans but by machines?

Well, let's see:

a. What is the near-term future of AI?

b. Is AI progress, improvements in models, etc., slowing down or speeding up?

Here is a nice little vid which speaks to these very questions.

Yes.

Nice vid, for sure.

I know that most of you will like it.

Also, by this time next year, a much higher percentage of what we see on the internet will be machine-made.

Hope you are OK with that.

Best regards,

Gamma

Some, the ones that want to put a chip in their brains so they don't have to use their phone, will love it, till they lose their job to AI.

The ones that will REALLY love AI are the pornographers- don't need real people any more. Company owners- don't need real people any more. The military- don't need real people any more. Transport companies, including ship owners- don't need real people any more.

Mine owners-don't need real people any more. Airline owners- don't need real people any more. Orchard owners- don't need real people any more. Railway owners- don't need real people any more. Movie makers- don't need real people any more. Music producers- don't need real people any more. Etc etc etc.

Who won't love it- the government that has to find the money to give the dole to all the unemployable.

If young people want a job that is reasonably likely to survive- get into hospitality or nursing.

Pornographers have always been the group that have pushed the frontiers on the internet, and are responsible for the fast pace of development in just so many cases.

And now....

One wonders how this Topic ended up in the IT forum.

This is so obviously NOT about Information Technology.

Neither is it about Computers, per se.

This Topic is about Social Change, and much more.

It is about economics, and a shrinking workforce.

If one were to ask how to install a LLM on a home PC, then it would be suited to the IT and Computers forum...yet....

This Topic is NOT about that.

Perhaps, it would be nice for some if there was an AI Forum?

But, until then, where does one put Topics like this, that discuss the ...

ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS of AI?

And, the rapid-rate of increase of improvements of models?

In the IT section?  Probably not.

The IT section rarely discusses social and ethical implications of important new advances in technology.

The only place I know that might be appropriate for a Topic of this kind is in the General Topics or the Pub sections.

Certainly not in the Farming Section, probably.

20 years seems a very long time.

Seems to me that the doubling-time of improvements in this field is only about FIVE MONTHS.

So, please feel free to do the math using this as a doubling time.

Guess we are talking about EXPONENTIAL growth here.

Think less than FIVE YEARS, if this is true.

Great so odds are I won't get the pension I was promised. I'll be happy with a digital consciousness upload though.

Life is a movie. Currently we are in the early stages of Idiocracy, to be followed by a short period of WALL-E. The Children of Men will be the ultimate finale.

Assuming the birthrate does manage to exceed 1.0 in the next few centuries, I can see historians of the 25th century scratching their heads about the cause of the downfall of 21st century civilization in much the same way as we contemplate the demise of the Phoenicians and Egyptians. They will wonder aghast as to why a society that became so wealthy could disappear suddenly within a few decades.

Just ask Julius Ceaser. :coffee1:
