For what? Food poisoning would be difficult to reject on any grounds given it's obviously unrelated to any known conditions. Other illnesses not brought on by something at the destination point would be more challenging to claim.

Every major hospital knows that most western nations, US & UK included, maintain an insurance database and there are agencies online that specialize in determining if a person has an active policy.

When my friend was hit by a car and was in a coma, his brother in the US was able to call an agency found on Google.  All he had to provide was his brothers full name and date of birth.  Within 5 minutes, he had his brothers Travel insurance company name and policy number.   Insurance company turned out to be terrible but that's another issue.

No known conditions related to these conditions? I could imagine an insurance company looking for ways to weasel out of cardiac arrest and stroke if you had a history of high blood pressure etc. They are all conditions for which you'd not want to pay out of your own pocket.

In Australia we had one medi-vacced back to Australia from Bali after the money was raised and then they pulled the plug because they were brain dead. Sometimes they just want to keep the meter running

Ethics in Thai health industry are very questionable...I don't know about Indonessia. However  with no insurance one cannot be sure the patient is having appropriate care.  Also people overestimate the training and competence in Thai healthcare.

Asean Now - the Hub of GoFundMe scam stories lifted directly from the pages of various British tabloids.

Surely there are AN/TV members living on Koh Samui that could go visit this poor guy and bring him some flowers or something ?

I think that's why all these scam stories happen in Phuket or Koh Samui. Places where apparently no one cares enough to maybe go check on a fellow countryman and offer help.

It's also why these stories never have any specific details. Want to bet this never made the local (or national) news when it happened either ?

Lol - you have to donate to the GoFundMe in order to make a comment so I can't ask which hospital he is in - which I doubt would get a response anyways for some reason.

That's where all this is coming from? Maybe if it was a long term expat or a forum member that would be more relevant but random tourists shouldn't have their e-begging publicized on a public forum in my opinion.

No insurance again, then does the ultimately stupid thing here of riding a bike, Russian roulette. Don't feel sorry for him at all, now the begging begins as usual.

What is your problem, are you mentally weakened? You don't have to pay anything

Huh?

Ibs Sule expressed frustration over the difficulties in accessing any pertinent information. "We don’t know whether or not he had travel insurance, and the companies make it impossible to find out."
