I cannot find the electrical forum anymore

Basically I want to run wires along the poles (from the carport) and have a switch installed near the red x on the pole in the photo. We want our builders to lay a small slab of concrete (in the area where the green pipe is leaning against the bucket in the corner) and intend to put a few water tanks and a pump there

From the pole to the pump will be 5m or more. The pump cord will obviously not reach that. So what is the solution?

Options

1. dont put the switch at the red x. Instead run it down the pole and then along the wall closer. Put the switch on the side of the wall?

2. Install the switch on the pole at the red x and ask electrician to extend the length of the pump cord by 5m and run that underground to the pole. Cover that wire in plastic pipe?

Which is best option?

thanks

As with most things here, it's really entirely up to you.

A few thoughts.

  • Do you actually need a switch at the pump? A waterproof outlet on the pole may be better.
  • If you do want a switch, would it be better/more convenient at the house end of the cable?
  • Don't "extend" the pump cable, replace it with a suitable length of flexible cable in a conduit to protect it from the weather and UV.
  • I wouldn't run underground unless you use underground rated cable (even if it's in conduit), underground conduit invariably fills with water no matter how carefully we seal the ends.
  • The cable run from the house should be protected by an RCD if your installation doesn't already have one.

All good fun 🙂

thanks for your comments

can i clarify... If I do put a switch at the house area... The pump wire is probably only 1.5m long (as per what Im buying at homepro). Its only a really short cable.   Are you saying that the sparkie cuts that and puts a new cable on the pump and runs that cable all the way to the carport switch?. Does he put that in a waterproof plastic pipe covering for protection from water?

the pole is 5m away from the pump. is it the same as above? does the sparkie change the pump wire?

Sorry to but in, but I would use the correct cable and put it underground.

I think overhead wires in the yard look horrible and overhead cables, although20250313_080436.jpg.327014fbef08a964743676cb16c109a3.jpg insulated, will sometime get hit by diggers etc. Birds will sit on it and poop everywhere.

That big black cable is special underground cable covered in another sheath. I dug mine down 3 feet.

That is not the only option. Specially for the OP clipped to the wall in steel conduit is a significantly better option.

these are the clips

and in the steel conduit, the paint is optional 😉

You can  of course use the HDPR pipe instead of the steel.

Hello

I may have not understood where the power is coming from. I thought the power was coming from the carport to the right of the fence and pole and going overhead to the pole.

(I'm never wrong). 🙂

yes. that is correct. It comes from the carport along the wires at the top of the pole. run down the pole and maybe position it on the wall close to where the pump might be located.

Nice looking build you got going there.

What did you decide to do?
