I worked in the airline industry for many years.  Aircraft weight and balance calculations are critical to flight safety and are usually based on standard weights which are derived from survey data conducted by aviation authorities or by the airlines.  These standard weight assumptions for male, female, children and infant passengers and crew, including carry-on baggage, are detailed in their operational procedures.  These standard weights do change over the years.  For example, internet research suggests that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) calculates the average weight of a male passenger at 84.6 kg and females at 66.6 kg whereas the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) estimates adult male and female passengers at 90.7 kg and 81.2 kgs in summer changing to 93 kg and 83.5 kg in winter), including carry-on baggage.

Large people are not always fat ,some are just big. I sat next to a Hells Angel guy once he had very broad shoulders and massive arms but no lard. A nice enough guy but there was no way that he could avoid occupying part of my space. I was lucky I had a window seat so could sit sideways for the three hour flight.

Back in an earlier life we calculated:

 

75Kgs M + 3Kgs Handbaggage (Yes 3, and it was enforced.)

63Kgs F   +3Kgs Handluggage - women and girls usually were allowed a handbag as well.

43Kgs C  +3Kgs

10Kgs Infant up to 2 years of age (officially no hand luggage but obviously kiddy needs accepted)

Flew Nokair dmk to buriram. Selected my seat when booking. 

Different seat when checking in. No big deal for a one hour flight. The bloke I would have been sitting next to in my selected seat was.......quite large. Obviously the check in people keep an eye out on things.

Only an hour but not the time I'd like to spend in someone's armpit.

i would ask to have one of us moved, but try to do so tactfully.

I'd probably inform the large one that this want going to work for me and then get up and have a private word with cabin crew to resolve the issue.

you are kind of at the airline's mercy though, if they say no you can't kick up a stink without risking  a place on the no-fly list.

Personally, I don't think someone who can't fit into a seat should fly unless they pay for another or a larger seat.

I also think it is bloody inconsiderate for someone that large to think that anyone but themselves is responsible for or should be inconvenienced by their extreme size.

Most of us are cattle, on the plane then, outside I don't know.

Only EVA AIR, for a small extra payment, has a better seat, even for the fat person among us.
But because of a terrible airport, to which they fly (A'dam) I don't use that.

Twice I have had to sit next to an "Incredible Hulk". It's an awful experience. On each occasion, I was pinned against the windows. On one occasion I was able to move seats, thankfully, as the man stank to high heaven. The other time I just had to tolerate his obesity. He was unaware of the discomfort he was causing and there was nothing he could do about his size. I can't understand why people let themselves become so fat.

I would be agitated if some fat arse was occupying half of my seat. The only guaranteed way to avoid this nightmare is to either fly first or business class, or not to fly at all.
