Last time the 'express' took 13 hours from Ubon to Bkk, window was stuck open, doors tied back and a bit of string over the gapping door way at the back of the last coach we were in, where you could see the track below creeping by. absolutely agree ....   5 hour diesel dust chicken satay that's toured the platform 20 times.  

a sleeper cabin is the only bearable ...

I remember when u could drink in the food carriage staff also shared   a drink with customers.it was never a crazy place to drink  and after a meal a beer or drink.No one got drunk or silly and then they slept until they arrived  at the last stop.The train staff made sure no one got too drunk or crazy and thais also had a drink then slept
