Can Americans afford vacations anymore?

According to Expedia's 24th Annual Vacation Deprivation Report, Americans take the fewest vacations globally, and they also receive the least time off. To make matters worse, they are unwilling to even take their full allotment of days because, according to the survey, they're "too busy" to take time off.

 

Too busy or too afraid they will be fired?

Wealthier Americans – Frequent international and luxury travel

 

Middle-class Americans – Budget vacations, domestic trips, or occasional international travel.

I don't believe it is a cost or even time off factor.  Seems more Americans are traveling within the U.S. Especially Republicans they have something about spending their money on U.S. related things and why waste time and money going to places that hate them.

Americans could not afford vacations long before Donald Trump 1.0 or 2.0.  Many simply "charge it".  Just look at the amount of credit card and personal loan debt that Americans currently hold.  CNBC estimates American credit debt exceeds 1.21 Trillion debt and growing.

Indeed and it is very beautiful, having done dozens of states back in the day. However, most Americans don't really seem to travel since they tend to have scant knowledge of the outside world, or think it's beyond them, or too expensive, or too difficult etc. It's bizarre that the richest nation has its 'normal' folk having generally the least amount of vacation time allotted to them (is it even paid?) in the western world, then there's the whole paying through the nose for medical and the ridiculous tipping culture thing. What's the point in being super rich and 'the best' if you can't have time off and enjoy life? Not a dig at the place, and it's nowt to do with Trump, it's always been that way, but it's all a bit fugged up!

Traveling to SE Asia from the USA is a haul.    It's an expensive flight to Europe.   If you live in Europe, traveling to another country is much easier.

The US is not superrich, only its elites are. The majority of the population can hardly make ends meet. The income distribution is on on par with corrupt banana republics. Sad, but o so true.

 America is hard to explain.  Can Americans "afford" to take vacations?  What do you mean by vacation?  What do you mean by "afford"? 

 

A certain segment of the population can afford to do anything they want, including travel at home or travel around the world. 

 

Much of what's left of the middle class can still "afford" to travel, so long as Visa, Mastercard, or American Express is involved.  Fly now, pay later.

 

And some can't even pay their rent or buy groceries, let alone travel anywhere. 

 

I saw a news story today about Door Dash food delivery that now comes with a financing option.  That should tell you something about Americans and their financial situation. 

 

And there's also a cultural component to it all.  Some think the end all be all to a great vacation is hoping on a plane and going to Florida or California.  That's their mindset.  And some don't want to travel because they think they're indispensable at work.  

 

On the whole, I'd say not many Americans can or will do much traveling.

2022?  That's three years ago and a lot has changed since then.  Don't forget inflation. 

 

The government would have us believe inflation is running around 3% or so. A ridiculous number that everyone knows is fake.  It's a lot higher than that, and many people simply aren't buying anything but necessities right now, and many can do that only with credit.

I'd be surprised it was that low.  Depending on what you're trying to buy, the number can be a lot higher than that.  Some things are starting to come down, although Trump's tariffs might complicate things for a while.
