PM Paetongtarn Faces Censure Over Economic Missteps in Parliamentary Debate

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's leadership came under fire during the censure debate in parliament, as People's Party (PP) MP Pakamon Noon-anan highlighted perceived gaps in her economic acumen. Pakamon criticised Paetongtarn for past comments and decisions, questioning her preparedness for the premiership.

In her critique, Pakamon referenced a 2023 incident where Paetongtarn reportedly misunderstood the impact of a stronger baht on exports, illustrating what Pakamon called a fundamental economic error. The error, Pakamon argued, damages confidence in Thailand's leadership.

Pakamon also illustrated instances where Paetongtarn evaded answering critical economic stimulus questions—the PM had either diverted the questions to the Ministry of Finance or responded without substance, during periods of economic stress.

Further criticism targeted Paetongtarn's performance at the 2024 Forbes Global CEO Conference in Bangkok. Pakamon emphasised missed opportunities, citing Paetongtarn's focus on domestic economic measures, like farm debt moratoriums, rather than outlining strategies for technological infrastructure and workforce development when addressing potential investors.

Additionally, the prime minister's response about Thailand's geopolitical location during the conference was seen as lacking depth. Pakamon suggested that more relevant topics, such as economic policies and workforce skills development, would better attract foreign investment.

Pakamon questioned Paetongtarn's ability to handle complex economic issues, like the US export market's impact on Thailand's GDP, as a matter requiring strategic foresight. The debate highlighted opposition concerns over the PM's economic policy direction and capacity to foster investor confidence in Thailand, reported Bangkok Post.
