GinBoy2 Posted March 28 Posted March 28 This a big one. Being a Californian I've lived through my fair share of quakes. Loma Prieta was a 6.9, but lasted a long time, I was at the time living the in North Bay, and actually was driving on the lower deck of I880 literally 30 minutes before the bridge collapsed, that was a bullet dodged Northridge 6.8 i was on I5 driving to a meeting in Long Beach. I got half way there before I heard on the radio the bridge had collapsed My scariest was when I was in Tokyo for the grand opening of my company's new office. I was on the 25th floor when the Fukushima quake hit when all Hell broke loose, it was 9.0. Tables, chairs started rolling around the office seemed to on for ever. Tribute to Japanese engineering nothing collapsed, and all through it I was messaging my boss in San Diego, power, internet nothing went down A 7+ earthquake anywhere in SE Asia (exclude Singapore they don't count), given we all are pretty savvy about construction methods and adherence to any building codes is always going to be deadly 1
black tabby12345 Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Little had I expected to see the quake causing building(skyscraper under construction) collapse in BKK. This is the first major earthquake damage in Thai history. The first quake that brought human causality(of 2) was in Chiang Rai in 2011. While one huge half-built building crumbled in BKK, no damage was done to the apartment I live in Chiang Mai(it is more than half a century old though).

You seem to have a pretty strong luck. Any major quake damages(half-built skyscraper fell down in BKK, far away from the seismic center) in Thailand. It was almost the last thing I could possibly imagine while in this kingdom...

I lived in town of Alameda and was on the structure twice that morning to/from SF.

Those images always send chills down my spine. 30 minutes later and I could have been crushed under that upper deck. Sometimes the universe cuts you a lucky break, and that was mine!

I felt it 1.22 in Bangkok. And I think the information the OP presented was interesting, Not only to hear about Bangkok. To be honest I have read many other stories in this Forum which I found much less important than what this OP was writing. Especially as he mostly not knew at that time of writting what really happened!

The intensity of that quake in Tokyo was NOT 9.0. That was only a 5. There is a huge difference between just a 5 and a 9.0. Let's be clear. This is a logarithmic scale. If Tokyo were hit by a 9.0, I doubt you would be here, no matter how great you say the Jap engineers might be.

Bit of an exaggeration, Mueang Chonburi is only 40 miles from Chatachuk and never felt a thing. Not till about 4 pm I saw the first reports.

It was a lot more than that last time I drove it . . . but that was done in kilometres! But maybe you were measuring it as the mosquito flies? Or maybe Chatachuk is not a misspelling of Chatuchack?

In fact, in Tokyo, the intensity did not reach 6.6. And, in fact, was MUCH LESS than 6.6. There is really no room to quibble here, since the data has been published and checked...in many sources. I would like to direct you to the Wikipedia page which is quite extensive on this subject, and there are other reliable sources, as well.
