Quote

On Feb 6, the Thai Life Assurance Association (TLAA) announced a co-payment clause will apply to policy renewals and new policies from March 20, though it will likely affect only 5% of health insurance policyholders.

This may explain why I was suddenly told that a Thai Life Health policy I had been considering to take on to replace April Int policy would have a 30% co pay element unless I made up my mind literally within 2 days (it was a couple of weeks ago).

Reading the details below the quote it is not 100% clear to me. Interesting if any other members have had this mentioned to them as have seen nothing else mentioned elsewhere.

Edit - it may only be applicable to Life companies offering Health as an add on?

here is a more detailed article about the rules: link https://www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=86e6dff2-1d08-41f2-afdc-3ea15356c4c8

at first glance it does not look bad at all. it's pretty hard to be put on copayment, and major and critical illnesses are exempt. the way I understand it if you only use your insurance for really serious stuff for example heart attack, stroke etc. then you won't be affected.

If you are someone who spend 3 days in the hospital every time you have diarrhea then you will have pay a copay 🙂

My policy is due for renewal now.  The agent discussed this with me and told me that as long I continue to renew my policy on time, no changes will be made to my original policy I purchased 5 years ago.

Yes my understanding it is only for newly issued policies hence my "ultimatum" mentioned in the OP.

What the hell is co-pay....?

That is this wonderful Idea when you have a Health insurance policy and pay a premium and maybe deductible that you get a bonus option the pleasure to share the expense of whatever medical care you receive.

Example: Bill is 20,000 baht you get to pay deductible plus 4,000 baht and insurance would pay 16,000 baht

when you go to a hospital./doctor's office for any treatment, as well as having a set rate for whatever treatment agreed originally with the doctor and insurance company, you the patient will be required to pay a part of the cost of the treatment.  Some people noted above that if you had their policy with co-pay possibly, and the treatment was a serious illness requiring hospital stays, then you might not have a co-payment, it would all depend on you insurance coverage and like I said, an insurance company sets those amounts inconjunction with the hospital/doctors' office.  My particular insurance company sends me a brochure on line (15-20 pages long stating what coverage for whatever type of illness/injury and the co-pay for certain treatments.  Just another way to get a little more of your money. IMHO  A least in the US the costs have sky rocketed so to speak so that in the near future for sure, no one will be able to afford a house (already affecting millions), a car after the tariffs, normal folk won't be able to afford a down payment so will take 10 years or more to pay it off, and then medical and pharmaceutical costs will only be done with the really rich folks!
