Video Monk and Local Man Clash at Udon Thani Temple Sparks Public Concern
Screenshot from Workpoint News YouTube video A surprising confrontation at a renowned temple in Udon Thani’s Mueang district has captured public attention after a monk and a local man were involved in a physical altercation. Captured on video, the incident drew widespread concern once uploaded to social media platforms. The footage shows a tense scene, with a man in a black shirt holding another man back while the monk, identified as Yaim, uses his feet and fists. A woman's voice in the background pleads for the monk to cease his attacks, threatening to share the video online if the violence continues. The clash unfolded amidst a funeral ceremony at the temple. Journalists visiting the temple spoke to the monk, Yaim, who recounted that the confrontation started due to Tong, a local known for frequenting the temple to steal. Yaim explained he stumbled upon Tong in his living quarters, leading to Tong allegedly initiating the attack, which Yaim defended against. The skirmish caught the attention of those at the funeral, who intervened. Yaim conveyed his anguish, emphasizing that monks should resort to violence only if provoked. Having been at the temple for 29 years, he generally endeavors to diffuse such issues verbally. The temple’s deacon provided further clarity, explaining that during the funeral, Yaim found Tong in his quarters while retrieving ceremonial clothing. What began as a verbal dispute spiraled into a physical fight. Known in the area, Tong, around 30 years old, often leans on the temple's generosity for sustenance and shelter. Despite this support, Tong has been known to steal, including previous thefts from the temple. A prior altercation with Yaim resulted in injury, though no formal charges were pursued. The community is keen on preventing the situation from worsening, understanding that physical violence was unwarranted from both parties. For now, no legal measures have been undertaken to maintain peace and prevent further escalation. This incident highlights the challenges faced by communities in managing conflict and upholding temple decorum. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-05-30 -

Is Trump's war on academia his dumbest move yet?
Trump is quickly turning the US from the most favored destination for foreign students to something close to the opposite, and in the process will miss out on an unknown number of highly talented individuals. It's hard to rank all the stupid moves made by Trump the last months but this has gotta be high on the list. Totally pointless and avoidable. The Economist: Demand for American degrees has already hit covid-era lows https://archive.ph/fPH0L "SOME OF AMERICA’S most valuable companies were built by people who came to America as students. Elon Musk was born in South Africa and lived in Canada before studying physics at the University of Pennsylvania, Patrick and John Collison moved from Ireland to attend MIT and Harvard, respectively, before founding Stripe, a digital payments company. All told, more than half of America’s billion-dollar start-ups were founded by at least one immigrant; a quarter have a founder who arrived as a student." Kevin O'Leary Says International Students Are 'Extraordinary Individuals.' He Adds, 'They Don't Hate America, And I Want To Invest In Them'
