Starlink Roam: Are you using it effectively in Thailand now?

Recommended Posts

Dear Folks,

Is it possible to use Starlink Roam in Thailand?

If so, then this might be one reason to buy a laptop, rather than use desktops.

If you are using Starlink Roam on your laptop in Thailand, then does it work?

Just a question.

Regards,

Gamma

No worries...

Musk is too tall for me.

Also, to gangling for me.

But, I love him just the same.

Why not?

Is there any good reason for this?

Isn't OuterSpace free?

Phone & internet is a huge revenue stream for Thai govt.   Guessing StarLink would take a huge chunk of that.   I know I'd switch over, just for spite.  I hate monopolies and a good part of the reason we have Solar & EVs.

Without solar, then one has a completely unstable and unreliable source of power.

In order to actually do anything worth doing, one must have stable and reliable power.

So far, stable power is only something one can dream about, without solar.

The reliability of the grid here will not improve, judging based on the way reliability has been trending for the past two decades.

Therefore, the only solution is for homeowners to supply their own power.

But, installing solar here is also easier said than done.

If they want to supply services here, and if they bar the competition, then they should at least do it right.

Rather than building a railway, they should have first started on the Grid, with a TON of help from China.

Not really ...

... "Hi, can you give me a price for Solar ? "

... "OK, and you can install it as soon as components arrive ?"

... "Next month is good for us ... you ?"  .... THANK YOU

Didn't even break a sweat  :coffee1:

StarLink shouldn't be any different, if ever approved.  ... "How much ... same or just wee bit more than TOT "

... SIGN ME UP ... no more crappy internet or losing GPS signal when O&A.

So then, it's permissible to use English to communicate?

Or, is there a law against that.

The difficulty I mentioned has more to do with intended length of use.

If it were possible to sell it if one moves, leaves the country, etc.,, then installing Solar might be easier.

Seems to me that this is one of the only major hurdles.

Therefore, if this hurdle can be overcome, many more will make the shift to use solar and NOT use the unreliable alternative.

Starlink is not authorised in Thailand, but that doesn't mean that it won't technically work!  In Myanmar, the various pdf fighters use Starlink Mini, even though it's not authorised in Myanmar.  They buy the kit with a subscription for Mobile Roam legally in the PI, then take it into Myanmar.

If I manage to return to Myanmar, I plan to do the same - the antenna is small enough to easily fit into a backpack.

Starlink is not legally available in Thailand because it lacks the necessary regulatory approval from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).

Bring back two, and send me one, please.

I need to use it with a laptop for when the power fails here, which is increasingly often.

Have you considered getting one of the EcoFlow Solar Generators.  Router, computer and phone can stay charged up, when power goes out.  Along with other appliances you may need on.

Thank you.

Very interesting, and I had not heard of this brand.

However, I have heard of people using something from Bluetti.

Are you familiar with their products?

So, the question is, at least for me, which is better...for my purposes.

https://www.bluettipower.com/products/solar-generator-elite-200-v2?id=67c197013fc3f304dcea274c

The link is just to one of their products, I picked at random. However the Bluetti site has a wide range to choose from.

a. Which brand is more reliable.

b. Which products are more expandable, versatile.

And, my minimum need is to have two desktop computers running simultaneously:  Approx 800 watts, max.

Four monitors, minimum: probably less than 400 watts.

And that would do it for a minimum power demand.

Must be able operate for one hour minimum.

However, I would then add on to boost to...up to 3 hours.

However, the need for 3 hours of backup is not frequent.

============

Then, I am wondering if the internet router JUNCTION BOX outside, SOMEWHERE, has backup power, and how much.

If I cannot use internet, just having computers running is pointless.

=================

So, part of the minimum requirement is to be able to use the internet for video conferencing, or high speed upload download, with low latency, during a power outage of one hour, minimum, and up to three hours, during a longer outage.  (The crazy power here usually comes back online before we reach the three hour mark.  But, the power in this are is garbage, for sure.)

IF I cannot solve this minimum requirement, then probably must move.

Internet and computers are necessities. And, the power workers here, sub station here, probably have no comprehension that reliability of power is directly tied to quality of life, and economic growth.  Just how much education they have had is also suspect.  Do they even have a world view....haha....who knows. (Do I have a world view, for that matter....probably not.)
