Huge difference with Bull In China shop implementation and targeted tariffs. I really want to see how Trump got that 72% import tax figure from.

Trump got fun of all the people, because they are not import tax !!!

Just the balance in $

(import- export)/import * 100

Real import tax are in a separate document of about 400pag

Are you making the case taxes are bad?

Taxes that pay for infrastructure, hospitals and schools are good.

Tariffs are taxes on imported goods. Permit me to doubt they are going to be rebuilding America.

Who is going to invest the billions necessary to revive American manufacturing, when the White House is occupied by a demented old man?

People have always been ambivalent about the US, now they are just universally hated. Trump has joined the Putin, Kim Jong Un in an axis of evil.... and the irony of that expression seems lost on them

I dont know I dont do negotiations. Ask your PM what he needs to do. Maybe stop oppressing your Aborigines.

Actually the current Government put a plebiscite to the Australian People regarding having a voice to Parliament for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.   Unfortunately IMHO it was lost.

The Australian High Court in 1992 through yhe “Mabo Decision” rejected the notion of “Terra Nullius” or “Nobody’s Land” prior to foreign settlement.

This decision was codified by the Keating Government in 1993 through its Native Title Legislation.  Since that time many Traditional Owners have reclaimed the land that they have cared for for over 40,000 years where Native Title was not extinguished and traditional practices continued.

Perhaps it’s best not to throw stones where Glasshouses are concerned.

Look behind the mirror and one easily sees that this is not about relative tariffs. It's more about what concessions USA can derive from each country. These deals will be done on a one by one basis and could include so much more than restrictions on the importation of goods.

So ask yourself what does USA want from Thailand?

I have no idea but it could be an airforce base or it could be delinking from China in some key way. It could also be allowing restriction free importation of pork.

My feeling is that Vietnam will be one of the first to do a "deal". At 47% tariff and 40% of its export market being to USA, Vietnam cannot withstand the pain for long.

The unknown is of course China. Will they do a "deal." If so one doesn't have to be too smart to understand what Uncle Sam will be asking for.

Of course China will blink last hoping that US consumers raise merry hell when they see all those Home Depot prices going up.

Welcome to the world of chaos. It's not pretty

Does the average or any American have the mentality to sit making shirts all day as people in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc do? How many years does it take to train people for skilled jobs, who will invest in new businesses, innovation when people don't know how long the trade war will last and what the impact will be?

Robots and AI coming.

Maybe Thailand will reciprocate by deporting all American expats...care of Aeroflot

I don't think Thailand wants this particular reciprocal effect. There are far more Thais in the US than Americans in Thailand, and, of course, many of those Thais own a great deal of property, which Thailand denies to Americans in Thailand.

The good old Trump. Every business he has attempted to run has failed miserably (Trump steaks, Trump University,Trump airlines etc etc). And people think this will Make America Wealthy. Nope America will just be cut out of the supply chain and it's consumers will pay more. Americans think America is too big to fail..well I think Trump with his business acumen will test that theory. Yanks just don't coming running to the rest of the world when it all goes tits up.

Well, they wanted him and now they have to suffer. Canada should just cut off electricity and their oil pipeline.

If Thailand dropped its 72% USA import tariff, trump would drop the 36%.

What is it that USA exports that is so sought after in Thailand ? Can't be the crappy poor quality cars they make , Hardly Davidsons for the ultra rich or  is it the chemically converted chicken and beef , maybe Boeings with bits falling off or inability to fly straight ?

Americans dont need products from thailand. Thailand needs american consumers

During his tariff announcement Trump specifically mentioned Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia as tariff abusers. He is targeting Southeast Asia. To the extent he is doing that and not going after Canada and Mexico and most of Central/South America, I support this idea.

The best way to predict the future is to study the past.

Trump is repeating the policies of the 1930's not a particularly good idea.

I've just looked according to Trump the UK imposes 20% tariffs on goods from America that is a lie.

What he is refering to is the 20% VAT that is in effect a sales tax that is imposed on just about everything sold in the Uk no matter where it originates from even domestically produced.

The EU has VAT as well Trump is obviously not being truthful with the figures or he's too thick to understand which I doubt, more like he's playing to the MAGA faithful and those either too stupid to understand or just accept everything he says as gospel

When other countries retaliate and impose their own tariffs things are going to get very expensive in America of course that also means a lot more money going to the treasury collected from ordinary Americans that are paying the higher tariff prices.

The result of all that will enable Trump to give massive tax breaks to the millionaires and billionaires that bankrolled him.

Do you understand that  IF the Thai Government didn't have the Ridiculous high Tariffs on  import goods then Maybe DT would've put a  Lower Tariff on so Thailand would've /could import more goods into the US Now there will be Less Imports into the US from Thailand .

So You're Wrong.   As for Redirecting Via other countries They've been slammed with higher tariffs so that Won't help if they export the Thai goods to the US.

its been shown the average Thai import tariff on US goods is less than 10%, the new rates are nothing to do with recprocal tariffs, he has calculated the trade gap as a % and levied half of that as a new tariff on top of existing tariffs - he hasn't called it that though of course but thats what the analysis of the figures show. So now Thai should actually increase tariff rates to make the tariffs reciprocal

Sounds simplistic but whose going to invest in producing low tech products in the US at 5 times the cost that are produced in China, Asia and Africa.

its ok the 2nd step is to reduce USA salaries to that of China and Thailand so that manufacturing can be competitive - oh where are all those migrant workers when you need them .....

Not much of a surprise here really, he has decimated the countries that might ship in goods from China through the back door.

It's clear. Look at the list. Southeast Asia is the target. Central and South America essentially got a pass. So did Mexico, Canada, Australia, UK, and New Zealand. I expect in those latter instances that negotiations will quickly lower them to negligible amounts.

Donald Trump has announced retaliatory tariffs on countries with which the U.S. has a trade deficit. The new tariffs, starting at 10%, affect a wide range of countries, with Thailand facing a 36% tariff.

On 2nd April 2025, President Trump held a press conference at the White House announcing the implementation of tariffs on nearly all imported goods into the US, beginning at 10%. However, certain countries, including Thailand, will face much harsher tariffs due to significant trade deficits with the US.

Under this new system, tariffs will vary across countries. While the UK, Brazil, and several others begin at 10%, Thailand faces a steep 36% tariff. Other nations are also heavily impacted, with Vietnam at 46% and Cambodia at 49%.

During his announcement in the White House Rose Garden, Trump boldly declared, "The US has been plundered and stolen from by many nations, both ally and adversary." He touted the measure as a liberation for American industry, stating, "This will be remembered as the day American industry was reborn and America’s destiny reclaimed."

Trump underscored this as a beginning of a new golden era for the US economy, also taking the opportunity to criticise previous trade relations with Canada and Mexico, both already subjected to a 25% tariff.

Highlighting his strategy, Trump added, "This tariff is a partial response. We haven’t hit back fully as it would be burdensome for many nations, a step we wish to avoid." Moreover, the tariffs will extend to foreign-manufactured cars imported into the US, enforcing a 25% rate from midnight on 2nd April.

Much ado about nothing.  The affected countries will likely lower their tariffs.  What's made in America these days, in any event?  Trump's term will be over before the world economy adjusts in any significant way.

In the meantime, enjoy the stock market discount.  As usual, the idiots are overreacting.

Tariffs will hurt American consumers and components importers. Brings inflation, retaliation and possible trade wars, reduced economic activity and breaking of trust with trading partners. Terrible misreading of basic economics.
