Which would you choose if one area only?

They are not similar at all. One you go to to climb to the top to see the sunrise. Just a mountain top, not a lot to do.  Mostly a Thai destination.

MHS is a hippy village now. Crowded and almost urban there are so many travelers.

Since been to MHS a few times, no desire to return.  For others that don't self drive, you may not have much of a choice.

Where is the NEITHER option please?

Hilly provinces with a view.  Not a fan of the capital cities, unless small.

Hate Chiang Mai city, one of the worst, if not, in all of TH.

CM, CR, MHS, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Lampang, Phayao, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok, Tak and Lamphun are all nice provinces

These here, not so scenic, unless on west side of, with some hills; Phichit, Sukhothai, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng Phet, Uthai Thani.

Same with NE, if not going up onto, or off the plateau, very boring, unless on the edge of, then some nice drop offs / viewpoints.

Why we like the South so much, the limestone karsts and hills are spectacular.

Besides, I lived near or in the Appalachians for decades, so had my fill of hillsides.  At least temperate zones has the autumn change of leaves, and spectacular.  Here, TH, different shades of green or brown, dull & dusty :coffee1:

Do have some nice flowering trees here though.  Golden Shower s, when in bloom look nice along the highways.

"Cassia fistula, is Thailand's national tree and flower. It's also known as "Ratchaphruek" in Thai

Made short vid of, at the park the other day, of those trees ...

Oh no they ruined Mae Hong Son like they did Pai? I haven't been in a couple years so I don't know. It's actually pretty damn remote and hard to get to with not many services so I think the average tourist wouldn't last long there but maybe it's changed.

Chiang Mai is fake northern Thailand but the second biggest city in the country with an international airport so it becomes a tourist hotspot for that reason alone.

Still it's better than your outlined region which is indeed the armpit of Thailand and should be avoided.

I would choose Mae Hong Son because I know a crazy hot Burmese chick there.

Does she have a sister?

She does, but I'm not sure she lives in Mae Hong Son. If you go down there maybe ask her.

Chiang Rai i really enjoy.

Chiang Mai is good but then i used to live in Prachuap Khiri Khan and that was by far the most boring place in Thailand
Took hours to get anywhere nice ,Beaches were good very quiet but apart from that nothing much
It even made isaan look fun.

Anywhere to go and visit is always good

Chiang Mai sleeping up in the hills at Mon Jam was fantastic for 4 nights but would not want to be driving up and down each day

After 5 days that was enough

Rai is nice. Maybe I could drive there and back. Chiang Dao is fairly nice.

Agree ... one does have to self entertain @ PKK

After a year or 3, since there really is no east or west to explore, as all of 13 kms wide at one spot, and not much more elsewhere, you get to know the immediate 100-150 kms away, very fast.  We know the N & S of PKK, like the back of your hand.  It's a really 'long' province.

When we do go O&A, the first day is getting to somewhere that's not already familiar and been to 10 times.

With 'downtown' side of Hwy #4, (1 km X 0.5 km), and only having <26k people, well ... nuff said.

Still 'Lovin' It', but definitely not for everyone, unless having a garden / greenhouse, and a few hobbies to keep yourself busy.

If an Alky, you can always sit surfside and chain smoke all night, if that's your thing :coffee1:

If you go through Chiang Dao stop at the cave and enjoy that lovely blue pool at the base of the mountain.
