Hello, I want to work as a foreign language teacher in Thailand, and for that, I need a bachelor’s degree, which I don’t have. I didn’t find many schools in Europe—almost none offer completely online studies. However, I discovered universities in the Philippines that offer fully online programs at very attractive prices, around 1000 euros per year. I’m wondering, if I graduate from such a university, won’t that be a problem in Thailand? Won’t the Thais expect, as a Westerner, that I have a university degree from Europe? Thank you for your opinions.

There's nothing wrong with teaching, but some AN members get their panties in a wad every time it's mentioned. Regarding your original question, an online degree from the Philippines might be accepted in Thailand, but I can't imagine it would hold much value most anywhere in the world. They sell degrees like that on Khao San Road. Good luck.

Pistachio, in a previous thread, I don't think you answered a question from me.  What is your nationality (native language)?  Is it English or another language?  That would affect employment opportunities.

Get used to it

Try to understand, some here are grumpy old men, they were born miserable, negative reactions is all they know.

I'm very different to most here, I'm not retired or on an aged pension, I'm very fit and healthy.

Some members here hate me for this, I'm always getting hostile, antagonizing comments with negative reactions.

I rarely interact with anyone because of this, but I'm always getting attacked by 2 or 3 here.

I had my truthful comment removed from a thread this morning because a grumpy guy antagonized me.

It's easier to shut me up than upset the grumpies.

Too many of them here

Yeah  I always see negative comments here that have nothing to do with the topic. I dont get it  theyre in Thailand have a beautiful girlfriend great food, and they’re still so negative.

A teacher that can have fun with the children, teaching them while playing games, goes a long way here.

sorry, were you an actual teacher you would realise that most of the people teaching here do exactly what you say...they are edutainers. once you understand this then look at the kids' proficiency. do you still think edutaining works?

Can't you just get a TEFL? Maybe pay is lower than the degree but more attainable probably.

I will be working on my TOEFL and studying university online in the Philippines.

You nailed it. They just want to bitch and moan for the sake of it

Always on the attack.

As I said earlier I rarely interact with members, I make comment to the OP or the article I've read but rarely comment to another member.

Sadly I get hostile comments regularly from members, they can't scroll past without antagonizing.

You'll find the grumpy, hostile members live alone, or have an old bar girl wife that is having sex with a few Somchai's in the neighbourhood

These guys don't have money for good food, their diet is poor so they are obese, extremely unhealthy, they wake up miserable.

It really surprises me  I expected most white guys in Thailand to be rich.

Why do you need the online university in PH? If I saw that it would just raise questions. Likely they want to see a gradate from the country their representing and not something so random as this.

Because to be able to teach in Thailand, I need the TOEFL and a bachelor’s degree. In the Philippines bachelor’s degree is 100% online and very affordable. I don’t expect to succeed elsewhere with a degree from the Philippine I m just doing it so I can teach in Thailand.

A lot of white people have miserable lives in Thailand?

Their lives aren't miserable per se, they just have mental problems and think that moving to Thailand can solve them.  Unfortunately, they tend to bring their problems with them and the novelty wears off after a while.  Then, they generally have to troll other people in order to chase that feeling of specialness that they got when they first arrived.

Many kind of have their self-esteem attached to their perception of Thailand.  They view Thailand and Thai people as being superior, and they are then able to feel superior by extension through being in Thailand and claiming to be "more Thai" than other forefingers.

In terms of behaviour, this means they end up hating other foreigners whilst claiming that all Thais are perfect.  They'll even go as far as saying that if a foreigner does something negative, but a Thai does the same, the foreigner is bad for doing it, while it is fine for the Thai to do the same.

Total delusion.

The real kicker, is that they will claim to be happy, when their behaviour suggest the complete opposite.

You mentioned "....Thais expect, as a Westerner, that I have a university degree from Europe?"

You mention "...from Europe". Are you serious on that point?

Plenty of other countries where you can attend classes / study online for a bachelor degree.

What subject would you study for your bachelor degree?

(Regardless of location, online / in classroom study.)

But keep in mind that teaching employment (especially English) in Thailand is a very mixed picture. You mention teach English, are you fully up to date with current attitudes / qualifications which schools look for?

There's websites which might be worth looking at re that question which can put you in touch with current teachers.

Regardless, there's still schools which aren't serious about teacher qualifications and will accept any document which appears to be somehow linked.

A question for you: Would you personally employ a foreigner who has a bachelor degree (in any subject) gained online for a position to teach English?

Another question: If you are a foreign parent would you accept a foreigner to teach your kids English (all skills) who just has a degree in any subject gained online*? And if the degree is not in the area of English development, same question, 'would you accept that foreigner as capable of teaching your kids English (all skills)?

(* Philippines doesn't have a good reputation for online

degrees. E.g. Who completed the assignments etc? Does the

uni offering the online Bachelor degree give assignments then

provide the student with answers to the assignments?)

Same question  If you are a foreign parent would you accept a foreigner to teach your kids English but I add...'and the foreigner has not attended any form of study specific to teaching English?

Perhaps others more up to date in this area might like to add their thoughts / experiences.
