2nd Shingles vaccine in Bangkok?

Featured Replies

I just had a shingles vaccine in the uk. It was not until after the nurse told me I have to have another shot in 6-12 months, I will not be in the UK over this time. Is it possible to get this 2nd shot in Bangkok, if so where is the best place, not Bumrungrad or Bangkok Hospital though.

You need to know which shingles vaccine you had. All if the above clinics have Shingrix but I think just the first 2 have Zostavax/SkyRoster

Get your Covid boosters too.  And flu, and RSV.  Can't be too safe.  Oh, pneumonia shots. Don't forget those. Oh, and measles and yellow fever are becoming a thing in the US.  If your traveling on international flights, yellow-fever and MMR shot might be in order as well.  And Covid boosters. Never forget those.  Covid is a killer.  Be safe out there!

The discomfort following the injection depends much on the choice of the injection site, also on the injection technique. The nurse at my local clinic in Italy did a good job.

"SHINGRIX is administered intramuscularly as a 2-dose series

  • Administer the second dose 2 to 6 months after the first"

Seeing that the OP is in the UK, I also quote this excerpt from

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/shingles-vaccination-guidance-for-healthcare-professionals/shingles-immunisation-programme-information-for-healthcare-practitioners#shingrix-vaccine

"The schedule for Shingrix consists of 2 doses a minimum of 8 weeks apart.

The recommendation for severely immunosuppressed individuals is to give the second dose 8 weeks to 6 months after the first dose to ensure individuals are protected as soon as possible.

.

For immunocompetent individuals the second dose can be administered 8 weeks to 12 months after the first dose. For operational reasons a longer dose interval is being recommended in England and Wales (6 to 12 months) but the second dose may be offered from 8 weeks after the first dose. Local operational guidance should be followed and either schedule is clinically effective."

I had my second shot 2 months ago - no pain and no problems.

I thought Zostavax/SkyRoster was only one shot and less than 50% as effective as Shingrix?

Then any of these 3 places. The last 2 (Medconsult and WellMed) are quicker/less hassle to use. Call to make sure thry have it in stock then just walk in.

The interval for Shingrix is 2 - 6 months, 6 months is maximum so don't wait too long if near the 6 month mark.

I didn't find it so. No pain at time of injection. Slight soreness in the arm a day or 2 after.

Not the shot, but I had high temp and a red swollen upper arm for 3 days. Not pleasant.

My God man.  You make light of vaccinations!  Get your shots.  You're life depends on them.

I noticed on the link you provided  Sheryl, if you click on the link, people over 65 it does say between 6-12 months

https://www.nhs.uk/vaccinations/shingles-vaccine/

People who turn 65 on or after 1 September 2023

From 1 September 2023, you're eligible for the shingles vaccine when you turn 65.

You'll be offered 2 doses of the vaccine. These are given between 6 and 12 months apart.

Your GP should contact you to make an appointment to have your shingles vaccine. Contact your GP surgery if you think you're eligible for the shingles vaccine and you've not been contacted about it.

You'll remain eligible until your 80th birthday (but you can have your 2nd dose up until your 81st birthday).

Information:

If you turned 65 before 1 September 2023, you'll be eligible for the shingles vaccine when you turn 70.

If however you click further down, where it says "Shingrix  Vaccine  Patient Leaflet", it says 2 - 6 months.

Which is also what vaccine manufacturer says. And CDC says.

Digging further,  in the NHS guidance for practitioners  it indicates that "for operational reasons" they are using a longer interval of 6 - 12 months in England and Wales  but 2nd dose can be given after 2 months.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/shingles-vaccination-guidance-for-healthcare-professionals/shingles-immunisation-programme-information-for-healthcare-practitioners

I can't find any study or literature supporting this  longer interval  (hopefully there  is one, but I can't find it).  I don't know of any other country doing this.

Does explain what OP was told. But if he is still in UK, and at least 8 weeks have passed,  he should try calling his GP and asking if he can receive his 2nd dose sooner since  he is going abroad.   Would save him almost 6000 baht, and be more in keeping with medical (as opposed to "operational")  guidelines.
