Toilet not "sucking" like it used to.

On topic, sounds like a partial blockage in the pipe. A plumber's suction plunger would be the most effective remedy.

The toilet has worked well (until now) for 15 years, so maybe needs some kind of gasket kit in the cistern?

Sounds like your toilet tank is not full enough: there isn't enough water volume being released to do an effective flush. This can be remedied by adjusting the height of the slider attachment that determines how much water flows into the tank before the water shuts off.
