Why don't the Thai police enforce it at all ?

 

Vietnam had an aggressive campaign and it worked......

They seem to let Thais off, probably because they can't afford a good helmet, pointless wearing a cheap rubbish one. 

 

But yes it should be enforced, same no drink driving

Driving in CM yesterday about 85-90% had helmets......

Once heading back home to a more rural area I'd estimate that number around 65-75% wearing helmets.....

They don't have pursuit vehicles & they have to set up sporatic roadblocks to net the the non helmet offenders.....

Unknown if they fine via traffic cameras.....Which are not everywhere....

Without pursuit vehicles there will never be compliance + the wide open spaces of rural Thailand would be almost impossible to patrol & enforce....

I agree the law should be enforced. But even the cheap helmets will crack before the scull.

If you can afford a motor bike you can afford a helmet

Often see police without helmet and if they have helmet on, they didnt put the strap on

Helmet laws are optional in Thailand. 

 

This officer is riding helmet less on his police issued mirror less scooter complete with sporty exhaust.

I think not. I suspect that the owner, the guy in the helmet, has just had his unregistered, mirrorless motorcycle impounded by the police officer. Who should be wearing a helmet of course, but when duty calls............

I am no expert on kinetics, but if the helmet cracks presumably it takes the initial impact before it gets to the skull.

 

I had an accident last year - I hit a fallen tree in a storm at night. I was briefly unconscious. My helmet cracked, but protected my bonce! Had a stormer of a headache for the rest of the might, which was spent in hospital under observation. The delightful nurse explained that they did a brain scan but " nothing found'!

Helmet saves life, no question, but this is one of those things that only effects the person himself/herself, only more education, TV accident example ads etc. can help. But at the end of the day it does not effect other people. 

 

Now, drink drivers kill a lot of other people. Bad brakes, bad tires, faulty lights and indicators, all of these can effect other people, I want them to be enforced first...!

What about time taken at hospital and cost of treatment and the trauma for the family and friends who have to take care of the injured (especially with head injuries)
