Do you think that either Kemi or Farage would have told Trump he wasn't welcome?

It was not about telling Trump he was not welcome. It was about timing. Starmer was too concerned about a need for a positive headline.  It is understandable why  Carney would have little patience for  the opportunistic Starmer. Carney is a restrained banker who thinks out financial policy, while Starmer and friends do not. Rachel from accounting has buggered up the economy, and now Starmer is in panic mode over the  migrant crisis. It is also about arrogance and the condescending attitude  that the English ruling cadres have. Both left and right have lost the plot in the UK.

The UK is ungrateful and has a short memory. It owes the fact that it did not collapse during WWII mostly to Canada. Unlike the USA, it was Canada that provided the  initial large aid package without strings attached. There was a $1 billion grant to Britain, along with a $700 million interest-free loan in 1942 that kept the country alive.  Long before the USA  offered any assistance, Canada was helping and putting its lives at risk.   Almost all of the foreign aid arriving in the UK was courtesy of the Canadian merchant marine supported by the brave Norwegian and Danish  seafarers. The loss at Dunkirk left  the British military ill prepared  for an invasion and it was the 1st Canadian Division, under the command of a Canadian officer, Lieutenant-General Andrew G.L. McNaughton who were expected to be used in the event of an immediate  invasion. The  RAF would have lost  the Battle of Britain had it not had the participation of RCAF No 1 Squadron and the mostly Canadian RAF 242 Canadian Squadron.  7  Canadian destroyers participated in the Dunkirk evacuation and were the  naval vessels which rescued the British  military at  other isolated ports . Unlike  Dutch school kids, the ungrateful people of England show no respect for the sacrifice of the Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders, and others who saved their country. It will bite them on their collective fat butts. This is one time the Canadians should be taking  counsel from Australia on how to manage the  UK relationship.

Awwww. Carney is still mad he got owned by Trump so now he's trying to pick a fight with the schoolyard weakling, Starmer.

Maybe he's also still mad at the British for voting Brexit while he tried to undermine it as Governor of The Bank of England. The Canadians have really got themselves into a pickle electing this runt.

Carney was not owned. Trump made a fool of himself with his  bombastic display of poor manners and ignorance. The UK is paying the price of its bungled Brexit. Now it  is crawling back and begging the EU for a trade deal that will in effect put back many of the policies Brexit was supposed to end.

I am trying very, sincerely hard to give PM Carney the benefit of the doubt. Waiting to see how he bahaves as PM before passing judgement. But he really needs to focus on Canada, not on what other countries are up to.

The government of Canada must be concerned with what other countries  are up to because those countries  represent alternative markets. The calm and measured response  is slowly paying off.  Fox was all excited when Honda announced that it will move the manufacturing of Honda CRVs sold into the USA  from Canada to the USA.  What was not mentioned is that Honda  will no longer manufacture CRVs in the USA for the export market. All of that manufacturing will be transferred to Canada.  The end result is that  the future for the  Canadian plant is secured, while the US plant will get an initial boost, it will be restricted to the US market with no growth in new and growing markets like Latin America or Africa. Short term gain, but long term loss. A  typical US business outcome.

Ha ha Jonny you’re a never ending source of humour.

You’re understandably upset that in Canada in January the right wing guy was a shoe in.

Then Trump started his far right rants and Canadians came to their senses and saw the horror of things happening south of their border.

Result, PM Carney who stands up to the spoilt brat in the interests of Canada.

We could also discuss how Trump’s tantrums turned people’s heads in Australia so that the electorate there voted in a leftist government but I think you’ve had enough of winning…..oops

Upset? 😀 I have zero interest in Canada.

If they want to self destruct with Carney that's up to them. They are a little irrelevant sovereign country they can do what they like.

It's mildly amusing that Carney didn't care about Britain's sovereignty when undermining Brexit but he's suddenly a proud advocate of the nation state now that the US wants Canada in the same way the EU wanted Britain.

But hey. He's a leftist so how could he not be hypocritical? It's on the application form.

It wouldn't surprise me if the State Visit never happens no date has been fixed yet after all the King is not well (cancer) and it could just be pushed further back until Trump is no longer President.

Perhaps it may not be polite to mention that during the Battle of Britain there were also Czech, Polish, Free French, Australian, New Zealand, Norwegian pilots and even the USA (with its Eagle Sqn)  supporting the British pilots.

As for the Navy I cannot comment.

The British Army lost a lot of troops as POWs and most of its heavy weapons defending the evacuation beaches. It also lost as POWs the 51st Highland Division so that the evacuation would succeed.

It's mildly amusing that Carney didn't care about Britain's sovereignty when undermining Brexit but he's suddenly a proud advocate of the nation state now that the US wants Canada in the same way the EU wanted Britain.

The usual Brexiter excuse for failure: Brexit has failed because either (a) it wasn't done right and/or (b) it was undermined by the forces of the 'Deep State'. The truth is more prosaic: Brexit has failed because no one knows how to make it succeed. It was - and remains - a bad idea.

In common with the overwhelming majority of economists, Carney was a Remainer and didn't hide the fact. However, he had no responsibility for implementing Brexit. His job as Governor of the BoE was twofold: (1) keep inflation below 2% (2) help ensure financial stability within the UK.

During Carney's 7-year spell as Governor, inflation exceeded 2% only once on an annual basis (2.3%), so I'd say that's a pretty good batting average.

How successful Carney was in meeting the second objective is less quantifiable. Overall, the UK's financial and monetary system were fairly stable during Carney's tenure, but there was a period during mid-2016 when sterling's value fell off a cliff. Remind me what caused that to happen?

Anyway, it will be interesting to learn how you believe Carney's actions have undermined the success of Brexit.

How do you know he isn't focused on Canada? He was simply answering a question asked that wasn't about Canada and answered it in a diplomatic way, something his neighboring nemesis could learn from.
