Embassies / Consulates make money from visa fees. An increase in revenue will be the only outcome of this policy, except maybe deterring a small amount of the kind of tourists they want.

Except the change is not an increase in visa fees, it's the application of a financial requirement for applicants.

It's not the money.  It's the hassle of obtaining the documents. Then the sheer number of tourist who arrive who will be looking blankly at a Swampy IO and say, "I need what? I have credit cards, debit cards, no a don't have "cash", I come from a "cashless" country, and you want financial documents from my bank so that I can get in?"  Then let's not even imagine the massive wait in line to clear Immigration which is backed up with confused tourists.

So, Thailand will lose more tourists.

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM!!!

If you arrive at "Swampy" expecting to obtain a Tourist Visa you have made a big mistake.

Your post makes no sense given that one can only obtain a Tourist Visa in another country, before one enters Thailand.

Other individuals on this thread talking about obtaining an e-visa while inside Thailand or talking about VOA please take note.

There are a whole bunch of posts barking up the wrong tree.

The financial requirements for a Tourist Visa this year will be exactly the same as they were when I last got one in UK (Sept 2023) and Laos (Jan 2024).

It was the equivalent of 20,000 baht in the bank for 3 months then......it will be the same now.

Any tourist arriving is also required, according to the rules, to have the equivalent of 20k baht in cash on them.......that requirement never went away.

Oct '24 and Jan '25 were VEs for me and a bonus, but now it looks like it's back to business as usual.......well lah dee dah.

😆

The conversation has evolved. Clearly this policy, in conjuction with the reduction of VE to 30 days, will force people to start using TR visas again (and in turn increase revenue) while deterring some people from coming at all.

Thread amazes me.

First up worry about change from visa exempt to 30 days when it happens.

Even then a visa exempt entry via air + extension+ one border bounce+ extension= 4 months.

All posts re SETV financial requirements....who is currently obtaining a tourist visa.

In any event the financials etc for tourist visa is not a concern .

Could you elaborate on the time periods, 60 + 30 is clear enough, but then the border bounce gives only 2 weeks and extension another 2 weeks?

A visa exempt entry via land sea or air provides (currently) 60 day stamp.

Even if that changes back to 30 day stamp then each entry can be extended by 30 days.

Obviously I'm referring to the 93 countries that can enter visa exempt as distinct from Visa on Arrival.

Okay, so for now it is 60 +30 +60 +30, if you do a visa run? So 6 months?

Yes.

Point is that even if back to 30 you can obtain extension and do border runs..

The limit of 2 per calendar year has been removed.

However recommended to use agent minivan run

You're correct - I just looked up my Feb 2023 trip online visa application and I included obfuscated bank statement and pension statement.

So actually this change is the process returning to "normal" after all the stupidity that occurred during and after covid.

True, but IF VE is reduced back to 30 days, people like me will be applying for SETVs again, but as my reply to @Enoon above implies, it's really no big deal.......just a waste of everyone's time, and an extra £30 on the cost of a trip to Thailand.

Not every country provides visa exempt entry.

UK 45 days visa exempt to Vietnam.

Me (Oz) needs to apply for SETV to Vietnam every time I go there.

I'm sure you're right, but not quite sure how that's relevant?

I was referring (and you replied) to VE vs SETV to Thailand which is (or was) ".....an extra £30 on the cost of a trip to Thailand" if a Brit applies in UK.

Thailand is in a bind, they want tourists but keep getting problems which are upsetting the general population. What should they do to filter out the problematic people? They can impose higher requirements, ban certain countries or profile individuals and deny them. None of these are easy to do.

Simple.  Impose such rules only on visitors from countries where the minimum wage is not 2x+ what an illegal-worker can make in Thailand.

This shouldn't be a big deal for the normal tourist, but this isn't aimed at them.

Also, This isn't new, it's just they haven't been enforcing it for what....the last decade or so.

This is Thailand and this how they set things up for IO's to make money.

actually this is easier, it used to be you had to have cash, no bank statement was accepted.

I used TR visas when this was en-force before.  You have to show it "in the bank" for the TR-Visa at the Thai Consulate. THEN, you have to make sure to have it in cash or traveler's checks when you get to the entry-point.  Immigration will refuse a bank-statement.  Consulates won't allow you to show it in cash (back when it was in-person applications).
