A respected soil expert from Chaiya district, Surat Thani, was involved in a road crash on the afternoon of 24 May. The incident occurred around 15:20 on Highway 41 southbound in Tha Sathon Subdistrict, Phunphin District. One fatality and three serious injuries were reported, all from the same family.

The emergency response team from Tha Rong Chang rescue unit, along with Phunphin police and medical personnel, rushed to the scene after reports of a white Isuzu four-door pickup truck crashing into a tree. The crash took place just past a palm oil extraction factory in Moo 3.

Rescuers found the vehicle severely damaged, with the front cabin crushed against a roadside tree. All four occupants, two adults and two children, were trapped inside and required hydraulic rescue tools to be extricated.

The driver was identified as Mr. Somkit Chitphet, 66, widely known as “Kru Heet,” a prominent figure in community-based land development and owner of the Pa We Subdistrict Soil Technology Transfer Centre. He sustained lacerations to his body and a deep cut on his forehead.

His wife, Mrs. Kanchuree, 62, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was unconscious at the scene and later died from her injuries at Tha Rong Chang Hospital.

The couple’s 14-year-old son suffered a severely injured left leg and was transferred to Surat Thani Hospital for specialised treatment. Their 6-year-old daughter also sustained serious injuries.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Mr. Somkit had recently purchased the vehicle just 10 days before the crash. The family was travelling from their home in Pa We Subdistrict, Chaiya District, to attend to personal matters when Mr. Somkit, lost control and veered off the road. The exact cause of the crash is still under police investigation.

Soil Expert in Chaiya Crashes New Car

Looks a bit like a pickup to me

Good to see in the first 10 days he managed to fit 'go fast' wheels

There seem to be more cars absolutely obliterated daily in crashes in Thailand than in almost any other country.

Just how fast must that pickup have been going to cause that amount of damage?

One of the few compliments I've ever received from my Thai MIL is that, given the choice, she will choose me driving her somewhere rather than her Thai son or Thai son-in-law, because I don't drive like I'm in the Dakar 5000.

If Mat Armstrong ever needs a new challenge, he should come to Thailand and try repairing some written-off cars here for his YouTube channel.

All that and it will never change here.

A culture of reckless driving madness.
